Look at this…baby gharial crocodile hatchlings! This is the first time in U.S. history to have multiple hatchings of this critically endangered croc. We think they’re pretty perfect. 😉🐊 #gharials #crocodile #fortworthzoo #history #fyp #babies #endangered

We have a bittersweet announcement to share: our surrogacy journey has ended after unsuccessful attempts to introduce Jameela to Winifred (Fred). While we hoped for a different outcome – one that includes Jameela fully integrated into our troop – our main goal has always been that Jameela is raised by gorillas. In conjunction with our reintroduction efforts, we have been in communication with our national partners for several weeks, searching for an institution that can not only meet her needs, but has a female gorilla with proven surrogate experience. We have determined that her next best step is a move to the @clemetzoo where they will make every effort to successfully integrate Jameela into their troop. We are understandably heartbroken, Jameela has left an indelible mark on all of us here at the Zoo and in the Fort Worth community. We have been in close contact with the team at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo and are hopeful that our ultimate goal will be met. We anticipate her departure to be sometime this week. Together with Cleveland, we will keep you all posted on Jameela’s next chapter. She will always be a part of the Fort Worth Zoo and, once she is grown and her father is not the silverback, we hope to see her back in Fort Worth one day. #fortworthzoo #babyanimal #gorilla

We have been following Gracie’s lead, and our surrogacy training with her has slowed and unfortunately, the progress we were needing to see has not been observed. We have made the difficult decision to end her training and shift focus to another female in the troop, Winifred (Fred, for short). Fred, 33 years old, does not have any offspring of her own but she has shown some interest in baby Jameela. Our goal is – and always has been – to make sure Jameela is raised by gorillas. While we work with Fred over the next week, we are also consulting with our national partners about the best next steps. In the meantime, Jameela is healthy, strong and growing like a weed! She weighs more than 7 pounds now and is working on her muscle development and mobility. Her round-the-clock care continues as we determine what will benefit her most. #fortworthzoo #babyanimal #baby #cutebaby

We are proud to share the historic and emotional story surrounding the birth of our third gorilla baby born four to six weeks early via emergency cesarean by the Zoo’s veterinary team with the assistance of human medical specialists, after Mom was exhibiting signs of preeclampsia. Mom Sekani has made a full recovery, but unfortunately was not demonstrating the necessary maternal signs to care for her premature baby. Zookeepers and staff have rallied around this gorilla infant hand-raising her with around-the-clock care for the last five weeks.
