I believe the similarities are glaring. When the former confederate leaders, soldiers, etc. were allowed to essentially walk back into the Union post-1865, it was easily one of the gravest miscalculations and decisions that could’ve been made. With there being little to no actual accountability, this allowed them to come back with a vengeance and implement an unprecedented reign of terror. Fast forward to present-day and we must sit with the fact that a man that advocated and insisted for his cult-like supporters to overthrow a democratically elected government is again the front runner and has a legitimate opportunity to capture the presidency is mind-boggling to me…but its not surprising. The reward for insurrection in the United States is a presidential nomination. The Racial Justice Act is absolutely one of the most important pieces of legislation in not only North Carolina’s history but in United States history as it relates to addressing and redressing racial disparities in our criminal punishment system. This is part two (shame on me because I meant to upload this days ago) but we’re talking about the ways that prosecutors intentionally excluded Black jurors from serving on capital cases through an act called “peremptory strikes”.
