I didn’t take a photo of me hitting the floor when I found out the baby boy I was caring would have Down syndrome. I didn’t take a photo when I locked myself in my bedroom and cried into my pillow because I didn’t think I could handle being the mother of a special-needs child. I didn’t take a photo of the tension between my husband and I when we braced ourselves for what we thought would be a major disruption to our family. Those aren’t exactly the types of moments you want to preserve in a photo, but they are forever locked into my memory. I was wrong about a lot of things, but I wasn’t wrong about my son being a major disruption. His arrival was indeed that. But not in the way I assumed. I didn’t know we could feel joy like this. I didn’t know we could love like this. I didn’t know one little boy with an extra chromosome could color our world with such beauty.
