We were being thrown a curve ball the day BEFORE reno was going to start proper. Our contractor told us at the last minute that we needed a total of 21 Kitchen Wall Tiles and 8 Kitchen Floor Tiles! (Background: We are doing concrete sink support for our kitchen sink, hence 19 of the 21 kitchen wall tiles is for this purpose). However, we were not advised early how many tiles we actually needed until the very last minute! HDB BSC only gives each unit 5 spare tiles per type. For our BTO, the tile costs $14+ PER TILE from the supplier in Senoko and no delivery is provided! We decided to try our luck asking our neighbours whether anyone had any spare tiles to giveaway or sell! Here are some tips if you need to source for spare tiles from your BTO neighbours: 1. Start early. Keep asking your ID/contractor early upfront how many tiles are needed for their work. (if you are only doing one shower kerb in 1 toilet, the spare 5 toilet floor tiles from HDB is sufficient. If you need to build a concrete sink support, be prepared with 19 kitchen wall tiles) 2. Message block or BTO telegram chat to ask 3. Monitor telegram messages as some owners may want to get rid of their tiles. Be near your phones so that you can respond IMMEDIATELY as it is first come first serve! 4. Walk around your level / block and ask any neighbours you meet (sat our lift lobby for 10mins waiting for ppl to come out of the lifts haha) 5. Head down to level 1 of your block and to the other nearby blocks and ask any neighbours you see 6. Some owners actually dispose their tiles at the dustbin area or leave them outside their houses too! (We met one owner who left it outside their house, and luckily the owner came back to the house after a few mins of us waiting around and we asked if they still needed the tiles)! Thank you to our kind neighbours! We manage to get all the tiles by the above means! Two from telegram messages and another two from randomly walking around neighbourhood. Another tip: The tiles are VERY HEAVY!
