Let’s talk Two Spirit! Two Spirit is an Indigenous term that emerged in the 1990s, but Two Spirit people have always been here (often as revered and respected members of their communities). It’s an umbrella term, and is most often described as someone who embodies both masculine and feminine spirits within them. Two Spirit people historically carried out both traditionally feminine and masculine roles within their community, and in some cases were viewed as a distinct third gender.
