But for the last ten years K and I have had to shell out ourselves because we’re married! 💸💸💸 During Lunar New Year 🧧 a lot of people hand out lucky money or red pockets to wish the receiver good fortune and well wishes for the year ahead. But in Chinese culture only the married people give out money to children and unmarried people. And there are several customs you follow while giving and receiving these red envelopes. The receiver is expected to take the envelops with two hands, speak a blessing to the giver, usually wishing upon them good fortune, health, wealth, happiness and safety. But you should never open the red pocket in front of the giver because that is seen as extremely rude. The giver aka the married folks must give the red pockets in pairs. You should only use fresh crips bills and never give a total amount adding to the number four. (Four in Chinese sounds like death and even speaking the word death is seen as very bad luck during the New Year.)
