France vs. USA: Taxes Edition (🇫🇷les impôts)! 💳 Filing taxes can be a daunting task! In the US, the process can be overwhelming, and many people find themselves turning to tax professionals for help. Individuals in the US are responsible for estimating their tax amounts due to local and state governments. If they overpaid, they’ll receive a refund, but if they underpaid they’ll be charged penalties. Filing taxes in France is generally considered to be less complicated. Your tax forms are typically pre-filled for you and there are online tools that simplify the process. Regardless of where you live, it’s important to be educated about your finances as it empowers you to make informed decisions and plan ahead. We’re so grateful to all the people who have been helping us with taxes and our finances for the past few years: our CPA (🇫🇷 notre comptable), bookkeeper (🇫🇷notre trésorier/comptable) and our financial advisor (🇫🇷notre conseiller financier), Guillaume Decalf, based in San Fransisco. If you’re a French expat living in the US, we highly recommend him! Guillaume is a fee-only independent French-American financial advisor for French people in the US. Note that his company, Oui Financial, doesn’t sell financial products or receive commissions (🇫🇷Oui Financial ne vend pas de produits financiers ni ne reçoit de commissions) 💬What are some of your favorite resources to help you manage finances? #French #LearnFrench #FinancialEducation #Paris #France #NYC #taxes

Racism in France / 🇫🇷le racisme en France. The potential performance of French-Malian singer (🇫🇷la chanteuse) @Aya Nakamura at the Paris Olympics (🇫🇷les Jeux Olympiques) recently triggered some extreme criticism in France. Aya Nakamura, a talented and globally renowned artist, is facing criticism regarding her suitability for representing French culture and identity (🇫🇷la culture et l'identité française). Many of these remarks come from conservative politicians (🇫🇷les politicien·ne·s) such as Eric Zemmour and Marion Maréchal, and personalities like Jean Messiha, with far-right (🇫🇷l'extrême droite) views. Rokhaya Diallo, a prominent French journalist and activist (🇫🇷une journaliste et activiste), addresses this issue in her article on @The Guardian. Diallo highlights a troubling aspect of French society: the discomfort and resentment often directed towards people of color who hold positions of influence in France. She highlights the pervasive societal expectation that being French is synonymous with being white. Let's ask ourselves: What is French identity? What does it mean to be French or to represent the French people/culture? Let's remember that France is a country with diverse people from various racial and ethnic backgrounds. Reducing the country's identity to a single representation may certainly reinforce systemic racism. 💬 What do you think? Did you know Aya Nakamura, and were you aware of this backlash? 🇫🇷Paris vs🗽NYC: 💸 apéro budget! Apéro - short for "apéritif"- is a beloved French tradition involving drinks with light snacks. It's a social ritual that typically occurs in the early evening, transitioning between the workday and dinner time. The word "apéritif" comes from the Latin word "aperire," which means "to open," reflecting its role in opening up the appetite before a meal. Many French people prefer to invite guests for the first time for an apéro at home instead of committing to a full dinner (and if all goes well, the apéro can turn into one!). There’s also the concept of “apéritif dinatoire”, where the apéro will provide enough food to work as a casual dinner, too (but not served at a dinner table). In France, apéros are deeply ingrained in social culture and often enjoyed at home, in cafés, or in parks. While the concept is not unfamiliar in the US, it may not be as profoundly rooted a tradition as it is in France. For example, New Yorkers may be more inclined to gather at rooftop bars or restaurants offering happy hour specials. We wanted to recreate a Parisian apéro in New York and see if we could find similar ingredients and what the price difference would be (41€ vs. $89.26) Were you surprised by the results? 💬 How much would an apéro cost where you live? . . #french #learnfrench #apéros #frenchlanguage #frenchculture #paris #france #nyc
