Although it was taboo, it wasn't technically illegal prior to 1788. Body snatchers would exhume a body and strip it of clothes. Curiously, they could be charged with theft for taking a shroud or clothes, but no one "owned" bodies. In the 1800s the number of medical schools and students increased greatly and with that increase came greater demand for cadavers.
