I have a 7-year-old son who has a hard time losing games. That says to me that he’s a right fighter. That means that losing is something to be ashamed of in his eyes. My mom used to always say to me, you’re such a good sport. And she said that to my brother too. I never quite understood why she was so proud of that. I used to think, what, what does that mean? I didn’t get it. What’s a good sport? What’s a bad sport? But as I grew up I understood that my brother and I both played to win, but if we don’t win, it doesn’t mean anything to us. Like losing is fine too, as long as we did our best. Mom used to focus on how well we played, not whether or not we won or lost. So you play to win, but you don’t care if you win, if that makes any sense. Like it’s not a big deal if you lose. There was no shame in losing. Have parenting questions?
