I often get asked how I complete my cakes, from start to finish. In this demo, I will show how I crumb coat my cake and apply the top coat. Your cake will need to be put in the fridge for 30 minutes to harden before you can apply the top coat of buttercream. Once your top coat has been applied, go around your cake with a scraper and then fill in any gaps that the icing has missed. The next time you go around your cake, make sure you use a hot scraper. This helps to smooth the icing and get that smooth finished look. I then use an angled pallet knife to tidy up the top to give it that flat look. Once I have this look, I like to put my cake in the fridge for half an hour before I start decorating. This is just so I don’t nudge any icing and make any dents. And then your cake is ready to decorate how you want.
