Types of pneumothorax Pneumothorax occurs when air accumulates in the pleural cavity, causing partial or complete lung collapse. Open pneumothorax - open pneumothorax results from an external injury, such as penetrating trauma (e.g. stab wound). Air enters the pleural space through the wound, leading to lung collapse and impaired gas exchange. 2. Closed pneumothorax - Closed pneumothorax occurs without any external wound or injury. It typically results from internal lung injury or spontaneous rupture of a bleb or bulla. Air enters the pleural space from the lung parenchyma, causing lung collapse and respiratory distress. 3. Tension pneumothorax - Tension pneumothorax is a life-threatening condition characterised by progressive air accumulation in the pleural space. Unlike other types, tension pneumothorax features a one-way valve mechanism, allowing air to enter the pleural cavity during inspiration, but preventing its escape during expiration. This leads to increased pleural pressure, mediastinal shift, and compromised venous return, potentially culminating in cardiopulmonary collapse.
