When I wrote this song 20ish years ago my mom was in the hospital with a severe infection. She was hallucinating and very upset. She was also re-experiencing very traumatic events from her past in her mind. We thought it was all a side effect of the medications she was on, not knowing she was at the start of a long battle with Alzheimer’s. For many of those years she was tortured by her old memories. For years she was tortured by trying to recognize her loved ones. She hasn’t recognized me for years, though sometimes there are brief moments, glimmers. It’s pretty amazing she is still alive. She is in a new stage where she is mostly like a toddler and mostly very pleasant to be around. I feel lucky to have this time with her because for a long time this disease made her be very mean to me. Now, she doesnt know me but she is happy to see me. When i make funny faces at her she makes them back. It helps me reconnect emotionally to our relationship when i was a small child. Anyway, love to everyone with sick moms, dead moms, and complicated moms. I see you. I get it. Huge hug.
