White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said Tuesday that the Trump administration’s freeze on federal funding to a variety of programs is a “temporary pause” and will not affect individual assistance. “If you are receiving individual assistance from the federal government, you will still continue to receive that,” Leavitt said during her first briefing ever in the White House press room. “However, it is the responsibility of this president and this administration to be good stewards of taxpayer dollars.” In a memo issued Monday night, Matthew Vaeth, acting director of the Office of Management and Budget, said federal agencies would be required to “identify and review all federal financial assistance programs and supporting activities consistent with the president's policies and requirements.” As part of the review, all federal grants and loans would be paused starting Tuesday at 5 p.m. Eastern. “The use of Federal resources to advance Marxist equity, transgenderism, and green new deal social engineering policies is a waste of taxpayer dollars that does not improve the day-to-day lives of those we serve,” Vaeth wrote. The move created confusion and has the potential to affect ongoing health care research, education programs and other initiatives that rely on federal funding, such as Meals on Wheels. After the briefing, Leavitt addressed reports that a website used by states to get Medicaid payments is offline. “We have confirmed no payments have been affected — they are still being processed and sent,” she wrote on social media. “We expect the portal will be back online shortly.” #news #pbsnews #pbs #politics #trump
