You don’t need more self-control… You need to build a healthy relationship with the emotion of anger… I would bet that, in childhood, when you got angry (especially before the age of 6), your parents responded by: - Blaming you - Shaming you - Yelling at you - Dismissing you - Sending you away to “calm down” - Angrily correcting you - Shutting you down - Stifling your outbursts - Giving you “the look” - Punishing you I’m sure they had good intentions and simply wanted to teach you what is and is not appropriate or acceptable…but what did THEY MODEL TO YOU when they were angry? Were they able to express anger in healthy ways without disconnecting from you or causing damage? How well did they process through or express their own anger? Did they expect more emotional control from you — a child with an underdeveloped brain — than they did of themselves?
