I chose to launch my clothing line @ARAKAN by Prince with the Malaysian cultural outfit ‘Baju Melayu’ because it's essential for me as a Rohingya refugee born in Malaysia to embrace the culture of the country where I currently reside, even if it's temporary. As a teacher, I feel a sense of duty and responsibility to honor and respect Malaysian culture, including its people, laws, and constitution. Despite facing accusations of cultural appropriation and stealing, I want to clarify that my intention is to adopt Malaysian culture respectfully while also celebrating and preserving my own Rohingya cultural heritage. This is why I designed Baju Melayu as a tribute to Malaysian culture, crafted by talented Rohingyan artisans. I strive to abide by Malaysian laws and show respect for the Malaysian people, and I believe that launching "Arakan by Prince" with Baju Melayu is a meaningful way to demonstrate this commitment. Moving forward, I am excited to expand my brand with more cultural styles influenced by Muslim traditions, daily basic styles, and high-end fashion designs that reflect the diversity and creativity of our Rohingya culture and the global fashion sense. I will continue to promote cultural appreciation, teach style and fashion to my Rohingya community, and create awareness of my Rohingya culture, among other things. So stay tuned!
