my money rules as a non-frugal 29 year old working towards financial independence 💸📈 1️⃣ buy cheap first, quality later *this only applies to things I’m not 100% sure about, if I know I will use and love an item I skip the cheap stuff Doc Martens are a real life example for me - I wanted these boots for MONTHS before I bought them and when I finally did I literally never wore them. The issue was I don’t wear boots !!!! I wish I would have bought a cheap pair that looked almost exactly the same so I could see how often I reached for them and wore them before buying an expensive pair. I ended up reselling the boots and made maybe 75% of my money back 😅 This is also a good way to see if you want something just because its name brand, you want people to know you have it, or if you actually love it for yourself. 2️⃣ overspending is fine as long as you correct afterwards I can be a big overspender sometimes, but if I feel guilty about my spending I tend to overspend even more. Instead of beating myself up about it, I set up systems that allow me to make mistakes without the risk - keeping one month’s worth of expenses in my checking account is an example of this. 3️⃣ never sacrifice savings or investments to pay off overspending this doesn’t apply for actual emergencies, just for normal overspending and going over budget in my categories. I have done this in the past and it is definitely a slippery slope. If I reduce my savings or investments once, I tend to do it every single month and go crazy. So instead, I will hit my goals and any overspending will be paid for through the guardrails I set up in my budget. I will just make up for that overspending my being more intentional with my budget the following months. This makes it clear to me that spending isn’t a free for all! 🤍💻 my budget template is available in my stan store #personalfinance #moneyrules #impulsespending #savings #budget #budgeting #financialindependence
