A golden retriever aggressively charged and barked at Koda through the fence, and my boy was unfazed. Zero reaction, just a calm check-in with me like the superstar he is. 🌟 He even chose to sniff and engage through the fence with other dogs, checking back with me all on his own. It was a mix of walks, small training sessions, and wrapping up with some training at the dog park. He did such an incredible job and made me so proud! 🐾✨ We did have one moment where he reacted to a Samoyed outside some shops. The dog wasn’t aggressive but was pulling and lunging on its leash toward us, which made Koda feel uncomfortable. I thought we might make it through without a reaction, but the situation was just too much. I truly believe if the Samoyed hadn’t been pulling, we could have calmly walked by. This moment reminded me that our journey isn’t about being perfect—it’s about learning and growing together. For every slip-up, there are so many wins to celebrate. One irresponsible owner with aggressive dogs changed everything, possibly forever🥹 ✨Read✨ It breaks my heart deeply that Koda, with all his potential and promise, never had the chance to fulfill his role as my service dog and become the support and partner I envisioned. We began our journey filled with hope, but was deeply impacted by the actions of one irresponsible owner whose two aggressive leashed Scottish terriers disrupted our lives in a way we could never have anticipated. Koda’s instinct to protect a neighbor child in that moment, while heroic, and I’m proud of. It also led to a trauma that now cloud his ability to function as a service dog. Watching him struggle with fear and reactivity is painful, especially knowing how close we were to building a powerful team. I hold onto hope for a miracle with a trainer that will allow us to work through his fears, but the weight of this disruption and the uncertainty of his future as my service dog is a constant ache in my heart. The encounter with two aggressive Scottish terriers, who approached us uninvited on leash, shattered Koda’s sense of safety and triggered a deep-seated fear and reactivity that we now struggle to overcome. Since then, he’s fought every step to overcome a fear no dog should know, and I couldn’t be prouder of him. I remember that first time he reacted to another dog on a walk—the overwhelming shock and heartbreak as the reality of his trauma hit. I sat on the curb with him, sobbing, as it sunk in that this fear reactivity meant he couldn’t be my service dog in training anymore. In that moment, it felt like our future together had shattered. But no matter how hard it’s been, I will never regret Koda’s brave instinct to protect a child that day. He’s a fighter, and even though I wish things had turned out differently, I know he was only doing what his heart told him to. He’s faced bad dogs in the past, always holding steady like a true service dog, but this experience left scars we’re still healing. Whether he can ever return to public access service work or not, I won’t give up on him. I’ll keep showing up, fighting beside him, and doing everything I can to give him the happiest life possible. He still loves to work, so he’ll get to keep his skills sharp with tasks he enjoys.
