Adopted from an email 📧 @Caleb Wielhouwer had one of the most unique back stories the first time I met him. We’ve been to some of the same places but the way he captures them in his cinematic clips makes me see them entirely different. He used money he saved to buy a camera and made it last as long as possible by living out of his car for his road trips and at times even having other friends stay with him. Spending a summer in a caravan 🚙 🚐 🚗 🚑 I got to live a summer I never thought I’d have. during my later years of high school and into college I was always tied to classes or a job that prevented me from really getting to enjoy a summer vacation. It was always about getting ahead, making money, whatever I could do to get to that next step. Trying to get to that point where I’d have the freedom all adults do…right? Right??? Well once I was finally there, out in the real world it seemed like I’d have more things tying me down than ever. Careers where my schedule was predetermined with a week of approved vacation. So when was I going that freedom and autonomy I was promised? Retirement? So instead of getting a mortgage and car payment I kept my junker car and took time away to survive off of what I’d so responsibly saved for years to maybe enjoy a little bit of life. Instead of plan tickets and air bnbs I slept out of a car to road trip across the states and would meet others on a chance encounter doing the same. It not a way most people live or choose to travel which was made known when we’d have to drive 30 minutes into the nearest town of Jackson Hole. The divide felt like any cliche of greasers vs socs, kooks vs pogues. Like we’d come into reality after being in a forest of dreams. Out in the mountains, rivers and lakes it felt like you could just act without worry as if you were a kid again. You had a group to rely on. Jumping in a glacial lake during a rain storm… sign me up! Not going to lie it was rainy and cold this day and that water was freezing 🥶 but it was so worth the dip! How to join a caravan 🚙 This is the story of how we met @emmahardeee in a parking lot. And this was pretty similar to how most of the group was formed. You’d be on a hike or at a campsite and there was something that just forced our paths to cross. And sometimes they’d stick around for weeks at a time. Sunrise Hike at the top of Grand Teton was the agenda! What we got was completely out of the plan 😅❄️🥶 Did I say that it was the end of June when I did this hike? My buddy and I had a 3 am wake up call to get to the trailhead. The plan was to get to the top of Delta Lake for sunrise. We were on pace and we’re dealing with some cloud cover. We had to keep pushing as we thought it would clear. Little did we know as we continued to get higher and higher we’d find ourselves in the middle of a snow storm. First it started as rain. Then it moved to hail. Then freezing rain. Lastly it turned into a full on snowstorm at the top with 20 degree temperatures 🥶 The mountains are no joke and never underestimate them. You never know what your in for when climbing to high altitudes. It doesn’t matter if it’s late June crazy things can still happen. Thankfully we kept our calm and enjoyed the view but had to get out of there a lot quicker then we wanted. It wasn’t the sunrise hike we wanted but it was a memory me and my buddy will never forget.
