Is journalism collapsing?! Major layoffs across the industry are happening and national news brands are shuttering. Just today, the Los Angeles Times laid off 115 people. This follows layoffs at myriad other outlets. The rise of independent journalism on social media has been great, but it’s increasingly hard for independent journalists to sustain a business online, and their work is often shadow-banned and demoted within tech company algorithms. Anyone hoping billionaires might save the media will be disappointed. As the New York Times recently reported: Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, bought The Washington Post in 2013 for about $250 million. Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong purchased The Los Angeles Times in 2018 for $500 million. Marc Benioff purchased Time magazine for $190 million in 2018. But it increasingly appears that the billionaires are struggling just like nearly everyone else. Time, WaPo and The LA Times all lost millions of dollars last year and the difficulties facing the companies are getting only more severe. Web traffic has waned for many publishers as referrals from search engines like Google ebb, and the rise of new applications powered by artificial intelligence has the potential to erode readership further. “These vitally important news publications still find themselves ‘transitioning’ from print to digital — with major ongoing legacy business costs — as they build brick by brick a mainly digital future,” said Ken Doctor, an analyst and media entrepreneur. Mr. Doctor said the billionaires in the news industry were showing “greater signs of fatigue,” stemming from challenges including “news anxiety and avoidance and fierce advertising competition.” “The very rich find it very difficult to lose money year over year,” Mr. Doctor said, “even if they can afford it.” 👉🏻 Follow me @taylorlorenz for more tech and online culture breakdowns 👈🏻 #news #journalism #media #latimes #nyt #washingtonpost #jobs #journojobs #gaming #popculture #music #sports #contentcreator #creator #influencer #journalist #apps #internet #onlineculture #internetculture #socialmedia #technology #elonmusk #commentary #justchatting

Around 70,000 child-care centers are expected to close.
• Why? The last of the stimulus money Congress set aside for child care during the pandemic expires this month. The $24 billion investment has helped to keep the industry afloat.
• The possible impact: Around 3.2 million children could lose care, according to one study. It could also come with a big economic cost as parents reduce hours or leave their jobs. #parenting #childcare #washingtonpost . Opinion Contributor: @UnderTheDeskNews . Story By: Abha Bhattarai

Replying to @violamint Why dietitians promote diet soda on social media. Washington Post have published exposed this industry secret… that food corporations pay people on social media to promote certain foods, or discuss certain ingredients (like aspartame, or sugar). Whilst this sounds terrible, I actually found the article very unsurprising. Many of the people they featured openly disclosed that they had been paid (although not everyone believed the disclosures were obvious enough). But, this does open an important conversation about funding bias. Funding bias is everywhere. Everyone wants to make money somehow and every time you buy a food, someone benefits. Not just the big evil corporations people think of either. If you buy dairy, some companies benefit. If you buy dairy alternatives, other companies benefit. If you buy meat, some companies benefit. If you buy meat alternatives, other companies benefit. If you buy sugary soda, some companies benefit. If you buy other soft drinks, other companies benefit. You see the issue? Dismissing someone because of funding bias is not smart, because you would have to dismiss pretty much everyone. However, influencers on social media *secretly* promoting something without disclosing it, or lying about how healthy a food is because they are being paid are the behaviors that we absolutely do need to crack down on. So, just be careful of who you trust. P.S. my best-selling book, ‘Everything Fat Loss’ is currently on sale at Amazon with an extra 23% off in Canada and an extra 10% off in the USA. Feel free to grab it before the price goes up (link on profile page). #washingtonpost #soda #influencers #dietitian #dietician #diet #weightloss #fatloss #aspartame #fitness #fittok #gymtok #gym #calories #caloriedeficit #sugar #exercise #foryou #fyp #fypシ

@Taylor Lorenz For anyone saying that layoffs in journalism are a good thing, read these stats: Cities and regions with no local news pay higher taxes and have less democratic engagement. Voter turnout is lower in areas without journalism and news organizations. People are less likely to vote in down-ballot and midterm elections in areas with fewer news outlets. The fewer journalists covering election, the more likely it is that the incumbent will win. Political polarization among voters increases when newspapers shut down. Businesses in regions with journalists are more likely to be held accountable for misconduct. When journalists leave a region, labor violations increase across the board. Factories whose businesses are covered by journalists produce 29% less emissions vs factories and power plants that are not reported on. Every dollar spent on journalism produces hundreds of dollars in public benefit by exposing corruption and keeping an eye on government spending. Elected leaders who have engaged in wrongdoing resign at higher rates in areas with more journalists. The fewer journalists in a region, the more likely congressional representatives for that region are to vote against the interest of their own constituencies Cities where newspapers closed down saw massive increases in government spending due to lack of oversight People in regions without news media are more likely to report increased loneliness, disconnection from community, and diminished local pride. Areas without journalists are less likely to get federal or state funding in times of crisis Historians and academics rely on news reporting to catalog and contextualize crucial historical events Campaign spending is lower in areas with fewer journalists. Regions without journalists experience a “significant” drop in civic engagement Journalism, with all its flaws, plays a crucial role in our democracy and culture. *Stats collected by Democracy Fund* #news #journalism #media #latimes #nyt #jobs #journojobs #gaming #popculture #contentcreator #creatorrevolution #influencer #journalist #apps #internet #onlineculture #internetculture #socialmedia #layoff #layoffs #latimes #nyt #washingtonpost #a #millennial

So, in response to the misrepresentation and misleading narrative in the WP. I’ve decided to make sure that this vital information on natural family planning is super accessible to everyone. That’s why I’m offering the Fundamentals of FAM workshop series for the lowest price ever. Fertility awareness based methods have always gotten a bad wrap because most people think that it’s just putting your period dates into an app that guesses when you’re fertile. That method, the rhythm aka calendar method, is HIGHLY INEFFECTIVE. But here’s the thing, there is one method that stands above the rest, and that is the Symptothermal Method! The Symptothermal method doesn’t rely on guess work or woo-woo science. It is a highly EFFECTIVE method that tracks your in-the-moment signs that your body gives you in response to fluctuating hormones. My Fundamentals of FAM Workshop Series is a 3-Part workshop to guide you toward feeling confident avoiding pregnancy naturally! You can access it in that place that this app doesnt like when we talk aboit it 😉 Registration closes April 4! #fertility #birthcontrol #womenshealth #washingtonpost #medicalgaslighting
