Glanmore Presents Victorian Bad Ideas: Mustard?!? Glanmore Presents Victorian Era Bad Ideas: London Purple. Developed in the 1860's London Purple was a vibrant purple dye that was very popular. It was used both as a fabric dye and pesticide. Glanmore Presents Historic Bad Ideas- Dr. Moffett's Teethina Powders. First available in the 1850's this powder was marketed to help teething babies and relieve bowel issues for children of all ages. One of the main ingredients was Mercury Chloride. Teething powders like this one were taken off the market in 1948 due to the health hazard it represented to children. Glanmore Presents Victorian Era Bad 'Jobs' - The Crank Machine - Simulated here. This was one 'occupation' given to penitentiary prisoners. This hard labour turned paddles through a box of sand. The handle would be continuously turned for 6 hours, 6,000 to 14,400 revolutions per shift. The object of this labour was to help the inmates 'pay' for their crimes and purify their souls through hard work. No tangible products were produced from this machine. Glanmore Presents Victorian Era Bad Ideas - Hair Wash?!?! In the Victorian era a lot of hair washes contained significant amounts of Ammonia. It was thought to stimulate hair growth or perhaps remove unwanted hair. The company trademarked, and marketed both products for pain relief. Although the negative effects of the narcotic were soon realized and it was taken off the market!! Leave a #🎩 if you like! A fantastic exhibition of historical clothes called »Worn Stories« in the Stedelijk Museum of Breda was the reason for our group of the “Kuckucksvoegel” to travel to the Netherlands! 🇳🇱 Curator Amanda Elshout explained in detail how the garments on display relate to the late inhabitants of Breda which portraits can be seen right behind the exhibits. Not only was the way the exhibition was curated deeply insightful - to be able to get pretty close to the historical clothes without visual barriers or protective glass made it very exiting to study their structure for our group of historical fashion enthusiasts 😍 Thank you for this insightful and fun time at the museum! Glanmore Presents Victorian Era Bad Ideas - Perfume?!?! During the Victorian era floral scents were quite popular such as; roses, violes or jasmine. Aromatic herbs like rosemary and cloves were also prominent. In the late 1800's the development of synthetic chemicals meant that new shelf stable scents were available and opened up the world of perfume to the masses. The first synthetic scent smelled of almonds and was made from nitrc acid and benzene (a new chemical called Nitrobenzene). The downside is that it can be quite harmful for people; it can turn skin blue, and it can be absorbed through the skin causing nausea, vomiting and worse. It was a bad idea! #nopestalgia #museum #museumtok #victorian #victoriantiktok #history #historytok #victorianera #victorianaesthetic #victorianfashion #victorianhouse #quinteareamuseums #quinte #bellevilleontario #discoverbelleville #southeasternontario #glanmore

How did Queen Victoria make white THE wedding colour? Read more ➡️ Prior to the 19th century, there was no specific wedding dress colour in the UK. Certain colours would become trendy at times, but the focus was always on the quality of fabric and not the colour. Queen Victoria’s choice to use the colour white played into a current trend, and by using one subtle manipulation tactic, she made sure white never went out of style. #history #fashionhistory #queenvictoria #victorianfashion
