Info in caption. 👇 🔗 in bio for my recommended clear gesso. Here’s how to invisibly prime a canvas: 🪄 Whenever I make a video about priming canvases I get a few commenters saying they don’t prime their panels/canvases cuz they prefer to see the natural texture of the cotton, linen, copper, aluminum, or wood showing through as part of their artwork. This is an instinct I GET! But this feedback tells me it’s definitely not as well known as it should be just how easy it is to prime your surface properly but invisibly! Proper surface prep (aka gesso) is so important to protect the paint and the surface from damaging or discolouring each other, to help stiffen canvas material, & stop your paint from being absorbed into the surface - this is a huge issue if you’ve ever painted on raw wood! The standard gesso is a white, opaque layer that obscures the surface beneath but you can also get clear/transparent gesso, it’s slightly more absorbent & it dries really clear! So use that to let the raw material show through. Apply a couple of coats so that you create a sufficient seal so that you don’t have to size (seal) the surface first. Most artist quality gesso will dry very matte/clear but they may darken the surface a bit or add a touch of sheen depending on the brand. Check out Jackson’s Art blog as they have recently done a study testing a bunch of different clear primers - I’ll add a 🔗 in bio. Most sizes that some artists use before gesso to seal the surface and create more tension in the canvas (aka fluid Matt medium, acrylic gloss medium, RSG, Artist grade (archival) PVA or my fave Gac 100) are also clear & could be used underneath clear gesso or by themselves as a few layers can create a sufficient ground to be used without any gesso primer on top. Another trick I like to do is to use clear gesso over your underdrawing to seal it in so it doesn’t smudge into the paint! I got so sick of charcoal drawings staining the paint & I love this hack!! #AcrylicGesso #ArtSurfacePrep #GessoTechniques #ArtPrimer #ArtistsEssentials #GessoMagic #ArtPreparation #AcrylicArt #PaintingTips #ArtisticProcess #ArtSupplies #CreateEveryday #DIYArt #ArtTutorials #ArtisticSkills #TikTokArt #AcrylicPainting #ArtisticInspiration #CreativeJourney #ArtisticTips #OilPaintingTutorial #OilPaintingTips #PaintingDemo #OilPaintingTechniques #LearnToPaint #OilPainting101 #ArtLessons #ArtDemo #OilPaintingBeginner #ArtEducation #PaintingTricks #ArtClass #ArtInstruction #OilPaintingLessons #ArtisticGuidance #OilPaintingExplained #dorisrose #dorisroseart

"The earth laughs in flowers." 🌼 - Ralph Waldo Emerson Here’s the process of my latest blurry painting ‘Perennial’ from start to finish. This painting is like a mashup of old-school oil techniques with a contemporary twist. I was curious about capturing that soft, dreamy vibe of a photo of a vase & putting it on a canvas using these muted colors and hazy layers. I wanted to turn a simple, timeless, subject matter – a vase of flowers – into something fresh and thought-provoking. Fun fact it’s also the first tondo - aka circular painting - i’ve ever done which was pretty fun. Somehow it felt more like an object in itself, or maybe It just forced me to pay more attention to the piece as an object in its own right. Plus, it pushed me to think differently about the whole piece, you know? Not just the painting, but all the nitty-gritty stuff too like stringing the back, labelling, creating the certificate of authenticity, varnishing & packaging the work ready for it’s current home. I started off with a quick pencil underdrawing to map things out. Then I went layer by layer with oil paint, using glazing, overtop of a blocked in, simple underpainting. Those soft brushes were key. They let me blend stuff seamlessly and soften the edges. The result is a painting that’s been a huge pain to photograph because my camera thinks it’s out of focus and refuses to take the picture!!! #artreveal #contemporarypainting #oiloncanvas #canadianartist #dorisrose #dorisroseart #artprogress #OilPainting #ArtistsOfTikTok #ArtCommunity #ArtisticJourney #CreativeProcess #PaintingTutorial #PaintingTips #ArtInspiration #ArtisticExpression #CanvasCreativity #BrushworkMagic #ArtisticDiscovery #ArtStudioVibes #ArtisticSkills #OilPaintingTechniques #PaintingDemo #ArtisticPassion #TikTokArtists #CreativeJourney #ArtInProgress #BrushworkInProgress #BehindTheEasel #ArtisticCreation #WIPArt #CanvasAdventure #PaintingPassion #ArtisticExploration #CreatingArt #InProcessArt #ArtisticAdventure #CreativeFlow #dorisroseart #dorisrose

There’s a major difference in texture between natural and synthetic brushes. My favorite brush to work with has hog hair bristles which are more rough to the touch and more strong. This helps to create added texture in my brushstrokes. Additionally I find that hog hair offers a much more fluid type of brushstroke whereas the synthetic brushstrokes feel more rigid and flat. Finally the hog hair can hold a heavier load of paint which is more suitable for painting in the rough and loose manner of the masters that inspire me. . . . #art #notart #oilpainting #kitsch #kitschpainting #classicalpainting #oilpaint #oilpaintingbrushes #oilpaintingtechniques #oilpaintingoncanvas #oilpainters #oilpainter #artist #artistsoninstagram #classical #oilcolors #davincibrushes

Preparing canvas like the old masters. Can you apply oil ground directly to your painting surface? No. Your surface needs be sized first.Traditional rabbit skin glue is the ideal sizing, but there are synthetic alternatives as well. Does it work on top of gesso? You can apply it on top of gesso but it’s not advisable. You should reall use glue sizing. Send me a dm if you want to get the oil ground prep course. Benefits of oil ground prepared linen: 1. Oil ground serves as a protective layer between your paint and sized canvas. 2. You can scrape into the surface and create more layers & transparency without needing to worry about damaging the canvas. 3. The slick and smooth surface makes starting a painting quick and easy. Your brush will glide across the canvas without the canvas ‘absorbing’ your color. 4. The ground is colored a fleshy mid tone to make achieving life like results simple as can be. 5. Having mid tones covered means you can immediately begin to fill in the shadows and highlights. 6. Having this base mid tone also means you can intentionally leave transparency in your paint knowing that it will support you on the base level. 7. Having the color on the canvas from the beginning will set the mood of your painting and will create relative contrast. . . . #art #oilpainting #traditionalart #classicalart #oilpainter #portraitpainting #classical #craft #canvaspreparation #oilground #oilgroundonlinen #linen #linencanvas #renaissance #baroque #classicalpaintingtechnique #arttips #arthelp #arttutorial #arttutorials #artlover #arthistory #rembrandt #oilpaintingtechniques #oilpaintingtutorial #oilpaintingsoncanvas

😡 Don’t do this when mixing shadows: use your skin color mid tones and then just add black. This will make your shadows end up dull, muted, flat.. Disastrous 😔 But why? 🙋 It’s because you’re trying to tone without considering the saturation. The black will also be mixing together with the white in your mid tone which creates a muddy color. So how do you mix shadow colors then? 🤔 First you need to get back to the root of the color. Ask yourself: what is this color without any white or black added? 🧐 For skin colors this will almost always be orange. 🍊 When you mix your shadows, add a ton of orange together with your black to create a very warm brown. 😲 I know it seems strange, but it will appear far more lifelike and create a sense of glow. Why does it work? 🤨 Shadows are packed full of color. In order to make them feel real, the root color needs to stay consistently saturated from light to shadow. When you add the orange to your black you’re ensuring it has that necessary saturation. 🎨 Want a simple guide for mixing your colors? Learn from the masters: place the focus on one eye and make the other to lower contrast and less clear. How can you do this? One simple trick is to paint the eyes like normal, but then use sandpaper or a palette knife to scrape down and soften the eye that’s not the focus. In addition you can use slightly more detail and contrast on the eye you want to bring into focus. What’s the benefit? It reflects nature and offers the viewer a more satisfying point of interest. In addition it can offer a more emotional connection. How so? Next time you have a conversation with someone try to observe your natural focus. When you look at someone’s eyes, notice how you focus on just one at a time. We can direct the viewer to do the same by choosing the focus for them. In addition I think you can add more emotional impact with this attention. Bonus tip: create contrasting emotions with the eyes to infuse the emotional transition of your story into the subject’s expression. For example, paint one eye with a happy expression and the other with a sad expression. If the happy eye is in focus the viewer may sense the unease of the subtler sad eye long before they recognize it consciously. Only upon further inspection will they discover the cause of conflicting emotions. Have you ever noticed this trick? DON’T OUTLINE ANYTHING!!! Beginners are inclined to use outlines because it is the simplest way to create a separation between forms, aka an edge. The downside is that it is not how we see the world… What’s bad about an outline? Forms are not outlined in nature. Thus outlines are extremely constricting and feel unnatural. They rigidly trap forms into space and don’t allow for them to breathe. What’s the solution? Don’t think of edges as lines. Instead create edges by placing paint strokes with a difference in value and/or color next to each other. How’s that better? There will still be a separation of form and thus edges will be created. However, by painting in this way your forma will feel far more unified within the total space instead of locked up as separate elements. Bonus tip: If an edge is creating too sharp of separation you can blend the forms together by using sandpaper to break the rigidity, or you can use a glaze to blend the forms towards each other in color and/or value. Study masterworks and you’ll see how much color is in the lights and shadows. . . . #art #rembrandt #oilpainting #rembrandtlighting #rembrandtvanrijn #oilpainting #howtopainthighlights #howtopaint #arttips #arttherapy #arttutorial #artteacher #artlover #oilpaint #oldmasterspainting #oldmasters #portraitpainting #oilpaintingportrait #oilpaintingart #oilpaintingtechniques #titian #renaissance #baroque

The process of realising how I feel through the brush strokes and colors is a magical experience. Sometimes I know that I am feeling something but I don’t know exactly what but when I am done with the portrait, the portrait says it all. . . . #portraitpaintingprocess #oilpaintingtechniques #oilpaintingtimelapse
