More in caption 👇 Acrylics take way less time to dry so an acrylic underpainting with oil on top is a great way to mix the benefits of both mediums! Reminder: you can paint oil over acrylic but not the other way around. Also there is limited scientific data on the long-term effects as acrylics are a relatively new medium so it’s challenging to predict the archival stability of this method. Here’s everything you need to know about painting oil over acrylic to prevent issues: Dry Time ⏳ Ensure that the acrylic layer is FULLY cured (not just touch dry) before applying oil paint. Different paint manufacturers have different advice but to be safe i’d recommend leaving it a minimum of 2 weeks - preferably a month. A full cure for most water based acrylics is 30 days. If you’re applying an alkyd over it should be dry for at least 14 days so that ammonia and alkyd do not react and cause the acrylic to yellow. Underbinding 🤝 aka. when oil paint doesn’t adhere well to the acrylic. To avoid this never apply oils thinly over thick layers of acrylic, dilute the acrylics a lot, or use highly absorbent acrylics under oils. Acrylics made to be extra absorbent eg. GOLDEN Absorbent Ground draw an excess of oil out of the paints applied on top. Having too much oil drawn down can leave oil paints with the potential for cracking or flaking. If you encounter underbinding then consider an isolation layer. (Below) Isolation Layer ✋ Some artists choose to apply a thin layer of acrylic matte medium or clear gesso as a bridge layer between the acrylic and oil paint for added adhesion & to prevent any chemical reactions between the layers. Some also recommend you lightly sand the dried acrylic surface and remove any dust before applying the oil paint but I’m not sure that’s necessary. Clear acrylic gesso/primer & matte medium are both engineered to have a “tooth” and should be enough to create a solid base for the oil paints. #oiloveracrylic #oilpaintingtechniques #academicpainting #oilpaintingtutorial #oilpaintingtechnique #tiktokart #dorisroseart #dorisrosetips #dorisrose #howtooilpaint
