why I love real Christmas trees: • nostalgia: I grew up with real trees. Every time I bring home a real one, I am flooded with happy childhood memories. This is worth any hassle a real tree might cause. • sustainability: real trees don't create the carbon emissions it takes to produce & ship fake ones...you would need to keep your fake tree anywhere between 8 to TWENTY years for your fake tree to have a similar carbon footprint to that of a real one; whereas a real tree absorbs carbon. Fake trees can be composted or recycled, while fake plastic ones will live on forever in landfills. For every tree that is cut down for Christmas, tree farmers are required to plant 1-3 new ones, depending where you live in the States & Canada, and keeping tree farms alive allows all that land to be saved for growing trees, and as we all know, trees greatly enrich our planet. • atmosphere: while many new faux trees are looking closer and closer to the real thing, you can't beat the scent of a real one. • ritual: to me, nothing sets the holiday season in motion like the ritual of going to cut down your own tree. While we don't have ample tree lots here in Alberta (in fact I only know of one), its still worthwhile • space: as a person who's primarily lived in smaller homes & apartments, Christmas decor takes up a lot of much needed storage room. Keeping a 5-10ft Christmas tree and hauling it around while moving from place to place just isn't very doable. instructions for making your own ornaments ⬇️ as a thrifty, sustainable fashion girly, you better believe I'm all about being a thrifty, sustainable Christmas girly too. I've been making my own ornaments for a quite a few years now (pretty much since l've lived on my own), and here are a few of my favourites: dried orange slices 🍊 you can make these into a garland, use for individual hanging ornaments, or even have out in jars vear round as decor. Mine usually last me a couple years, you just have to make sure they are completely dry so they don't mold. I used 8 oranges, and it was enough to cover my tree & use around the garland. - set your oven to its lowest possible setting; the lower & slower the better - slice oranges as thin and evenly as you can -pat dry to remove excess moisture -spread the slices on either a wire baking rack (this works best), or if you don't have those (like me) a baking sheet works just fine! - bake for 2+ hours depending on the heat of your oven. Mine is a gas, and goes quite low (190F), so these baked for 6 hours. - use a needle or knife to poke a hole just large enough to thread ribbon or twine through cranberry garland 🍒 - you're going to need more cranberries than you think (I used about 1200 grams to cover our Christmas tree sparinglyyyy...the back did not get the garland treatment ) - use a needle & thread fresh or (thawed) frozen cranberries on a string - I find they stay best when I poke through the eye of the cranberry (where the stem is? idk what it's called) -I tie the ends by sewing around and through the first and last cranberry a couple of times before tying a knot, to make it extra secure - the garland will shrivel up and turn into craisins after a few days, but it's still pretty; however, if you'd like them to last longer, Ive read that you can spray acrylic glue on them. I haven't tried this yet though! I'm starting my gentle Christmas with nature's easiest decorations. 🍊 Orange slices are just that, no embellishment needed. And I'm making a fragrant Christmas 'tree' for my upcoming stall at Swansea's festive @thecraftandflea. Really, this decoration is all food, borrowed and found objects with an added few fairy lights. 🌿 Dried oranges 🍊 🍂 Thinly cut some perfect some orange slices (it's okay to eat the messy ones). 🍂 Blot them with paper or a clean rag and put them in the oven at 100C. 🍂 Enjoy the scent of sweet orange filling your home. Check and flip your oranges every 30 minutes. 🍂 They'll be dry after 2 hours or a little more. Then you can thread them with cinnamon or make a garland. Burnt down candles look a bit like baubles, so I wondered, would it work? And it did! ✨ Here's an easy way to turn old candles into your new Christmas decorations! The best bit is, they're entirely recycled. ♻️ You'll need: Your collection of old candles and a silicone muffin or ice cube tray, decorations, string and some pliers. 🍁 Use boiling water to melt the wax out of your candle containers and make sure to take out the metal wick holders and burnt wick pieces. 🍁 Then, and this only works for plant wax, melt them in the microwave! (If you have paraffin wax, like from candle sticks, you can melt them in a bowl over a pan). 🍁 Decorate your baubles just as the wax starts to set. I used orange slices, calendula, lavender and rose petals and leftover eco glitter. 🍁 Once set, thread them through with a needle. Keep your pliers handy to help you pull the needle through.
