We get a lot of questions about what John’s eyes look like and some people question if he’s actually blind. Hopefully this dispels any mystery! #accessibility video description: John holds his eyes open with his fingers and shows small blue-ish discs surrounded by the whiteness of his eyes. #theblindwoodsman #blindness #blindtok #blindtokcommunity #blind

This is why inclusion matters, this is why children with disabilities belong at summer camp too. It was so hard to send him to this camp where he was the only blind camper. But I loved getting this video from his camp director on the second day he was gone. His camp director called me to tell me his cane was broken. Somehow Ashton’s came broke during the day and it was in pieces. Ash didn’t really know how it got broken. But I’m so glad his camp director called because I had the chance to ask him for a video of Ash just to know how he was doing. And when he sent me this I couldn’t stop crying. I never expected to get such a beautiful video of another boy guiding my son during camp. Ashton told me that was his friend from camp and he wanted to help him. He also came home so excited to tell me all the adventures he had at camp. His friend from camp also gave him his mom’s phone number so we can plan to get them together again. I’m so glad Ash had the chance to go to camp with these boys and they had the chance to learn from the challenges Ash faces everyday. I don’t mind his cane broke at camp, we’ll get him a new one, but the memories he made are so much greater than any other experience he’s had. This was the first time he was away from home on his own and I’m so proud of him. #blindkidscan #blidnessawareness #septoopticdysplasia #septoopticdysplasiaawareness #disabilityparenting #disabilityadvocate #disabilityinclusion #inclusionmatters #whitecane #summercamp #disabilityawareness #soproudofyou❤️ #ourmagicallight #oureverydaymoments #oureverydaylife #blindtok #blindtokcommunity Video description: A boy walks with his white cane towards a bus then he hands his sleeping bag and pillow to camp staff on a white trailer, then he steps on the bus. She understands inclusion and never focuses on his disability. A couple weeks ago I took Ashton and Ocean to the trampoline park by our house, we had never been there and Ash was nervous to try all the trampolines and places here. Ocean held his hand and guided him to the trampolines the entire time, she also told him to follow her voice and he had so much fun! When Ash was little, he used to be terrified of big trampoline parks because they were so loud and had so many things he wasn’t sure how to try because he couldn’t see them. Last year was the first time he started being interested in going to trampoline parks and it was all because of Ocean. She always takes his hand and guides him in big loud places and he feels more comfortable. He also got so much faster at running after her and having fun like the rest of the kids at the park. I love how much Ocean teaches others about inclusion when she guides her brother in new places. If you’re ever unsure of how to include a child who is blind just watch the way their siblings treat them. #blindkidscan #specialneedsfamily #specialneedssiblings #blindnessawareness #septoopticdysplasiaawareness #opticnervehypoplasia #inclusion #inclusionmatters #inclusión #whitecane #mybrotherskeeper #siblinglove #siblinggoals #siblings #ourmagicallight #oureverydaymoments #oureverydaylife #blindtok Video description: A boy walks holding his little sisters hand using his white cane. They run up a trampoline ramp. Then they run together across many trampolines. She helps him get across a suspended bridge by holding his hand. They jump by each other on trampolines. They laugh together getting up on a trampoline. The text reads: “Why is your son who is blind so brave?” “Because he has a little sister to helps him do hard things.” “She understands inclusion and never focuses on his disability.” “She sees her big brother and not his diagnosis when she looks at him.”

Ocean is 6 years old but she’s grown up watching me teach Ash how to Braille at home. She’s grown up watching me add Braille labels around our house and practice reading Braille with Ash all of her life. A couple days ago she asked if she could learn Braille too and she said it was for something special for Ashton. She said she wanted write him a birthday card. His birthday isn’t until the 22nd of this month but she wanted to practice. Learning Braille as a sighted person is not super simple, I’ve worked on it for years for my son even if I practice I still need to look at the Braille sheet to make sure I’m making the correct dot numbers for each letter. I was so proud and a little emotional watching her working so hard to learn how to Braille the words “Happy Birthday” for her brother who is blind. I know I shared about this moment before in a picture but I needed to share this moment in a video too. I think there’s nothing more beautiful than seeing my daughter trying to learn Braille in order to write a letter for her big brother. Just so he would be able to read it. Having a brother who is blind is teaching her that there are other ways to write letters for someone and sometimes you have to touch letters in order to read them. I love the lessons she is learning and also teaching others by taking the time to learn Braille for her brother. #blindkidscan #specialneedssiblings #blindtok #blindness VD: A boy and a little girl sitting by a desk with a Perkins Brailler and a Braille visual alphabet, the boy teaches and explains the Braille alphabet to his sister, she brailles a letter with his help, he reads it and it says “happy birthday”

She’s teaching the rest of the world to believe in her brother too. Last year Ocean convinced Ashton to try one of the waterslides at our favorite waterpark. It was the first week of summer and I was sure Ash would never try a water slide. Somehow Ocean encouraged him to do it and promised him it would be fun. I’m so glad he did and he loved going down the slide last year with her. This year the first thing he asked about was this waterslide as soon as we got to the waterpark. He tried it with both of his sisters this time. And then both of them convinced him to try another water slide. I was nervous because because the second slide lands in a pool and he wasn’t used to that, but the lifeguard was so kind to wait for him at the bottom and guide him to the stairs. I’m so glad Ash has Ocean and Jordan, his sisters always believe in him more than anyone else does and they encourage him to do things he is afraid of because they never want him to miss out. #blindkidscan #blindkidscandoanything #blindnessawareness #septoopticdysplasiaawareness #opticnervehypoplasia #disabilityparenting #disabilityinclusion #inclusionmatters #inclusionmatterstoeveryone #splashsummitwaterpark #mybrotherskeeper #siblingoals #siblinglove #ourmagicallight #oureverydaymoments #oureverydaylife #blindtok #blindtokcommunity Video description: A boy walks holding hands with his little sister a year ago, then the same boy and girl walk holding hands at the same waterpark, cut to both of them going down the slide and then a clip of the boy from a year ago going down the slide. She never wants her brother to miss out. Last week we took Ashton and Ocean to the carnival and I was sure Ash would not want to get on any rides because he always says he doesn’t like them. Ocean saw these swings and asked him if he would try it with her. She knows how much Ash loves the swings and he thought he would love this ride. She walked him over to the ride and described to him every detail of how the ride works and what he would feel on it. Ash was pretty hesitant at first but when he heard how excited she was for him to ride it with her, he changed his mind and decided to get on. I wasn’t expecting him to smile the way he did when he rode the swings that day and it made me so grateful for the way Ocean took the time to describe it to him and he ended up loving this ride. #blindkidscan #blindnessawareness #disabilityparenting #disabilityadvocate #summercarnival #siblinggoals #siblings #siblinglove #septoopticdysplasiaawareness #opticnervehypoplasia #disabilityinclusion #inclusionmatters #blindtok Video description: A little girl stands by a boy with his white cane in front of a swing carousel carnival ride and describes how the ride works to her brother who is blind. He might be the only blind student but he’ll always know how to get where he’s going. Ashton went to his new middle school building yesterday with his orientation and mobility instructor and practiced walking all around the school to learn where everything is. He has been doing this since April to help him prepare for the transition to a much bigger school. At first the thought of him getting around a big middle school scared me but now I feel much better knowing he’s learning how to get around on his own. After he got home from walking around the middle school, I asked him where the cafeteria was and which rooms where upstairs at his school and he knew all the right answers. Sometimes it breaks my heart thinking I never needed to do this growing up in the summer, I just went like the rest of the kids on the first day of school and learned where everything was. My son doesn’t get to have the same experience I did but he is teaching me that there are so many other ways to learn how to get around. And being blind doesn’t stop someone from being successful at learning how to navigate new places. #blindnessawareness #orientationandmobility #blindkidscan #septoopticdysplasiaawareness #opticnervehypoplasia #disabilityparenting #disabilityadvocate #whitecane #disabilitypridemonth #blindtok #blindtokcommunity Video description: A boy walking down a school hallway using his white cane next to his orientation and mobility instructor. The boy feels a locker with his hands and continues walking with his teacher down the hallways. He walks down lots of stairs slowly with his white cane and his teacher next to him. He continues to walk next to her and feels the walls and lockers lined up against the wall as he walks.

He may not be able to read those labels with his eyes but that doesn’t stop him from helping his little sister. Ashton and Ocean made this yummy 4th of July drink together last week before he left for camp. We wanted to do something special the night before he was leaving and Ocean loved these drinks when we saw them. She described the colors of the drinks to Ash before we made them and Ashton had the idea of using his OrCam My Eye from @Online @ orcam to help her. The Orcam My Eye is a device that can read small print for Ashton and labels on foods and bottles too. I love the independence it gives my son and that he’s able to help his little sister makes summer treats in the kitchen. We also made 4th of July cookies using the OrCam My Eye and it worked so well reading the instructions for Ash. I’m so glad there is technology like this available for him to have these experiences with Ocean without needing anyone else’s help. #blindkidscan #orcammyeye #orcamtechnologies #blindnessawareness #septoopticdysplasiaawareness #opticnervehypoplasia #disabilityparenting #blindkidscandoanything #accessibletechnology #blindness #siblinglove #4thofjulydrinks #drinksforkids #summerdrinks #ourmagicallight #oureverydaymoments #oureverydaylife #blindtok #blindtokcommunity Video description: A boy and little girl make a red white and blue drink by using different colored drinks, the boy uses an OrCam My Eye camera attached to his glasses to read the labels for him.
