If a trainer needs to cause a horse with a history of blowing up, rearing, broncing etc to do the behaviour in order to “fix” it, find a new trainer. Mistakes happen but the reason why you typically don’t see R+ trainers having horses behave explosively isn’t because they don’t get sent dangerous horses / problem horses… it’s because the systematic way of training involves ensuring the horse is comfortable and below threshold before moving on to more difficult things, for the express purpose of avoiding dangerous behaviour and increasing the likelihood that they’ll have a pleasant association with the training and will not resort to dangerous behaviour. If you “need” to cause a behaviour to happen in order to fix it, odds are you’re resorting to punishment as the means of fixing it… all this is is behavioural suppression and it is a flimsy way of “fixing” behaviour with high likelihood of fallout behaviour or the horse bottling up communication until they can’t anymore, and then that’s when you see really dangerous behaviour. I don’t want to endanger myself or damage the relationship I have with horses, so even when I’m sent horses with issues, if I’m actually doing my job well, they should never look dangerous. If they do behave dangerously, it means I have missed something and need to reassess. The archaic training methods that are normalized in the horse world contribute to a lot of the injuries we see to humans, in my opinion. It is not necessary to deliberately endanger yourself, even if you get sent difficult horses. #horsetraining #clickertraininghorses #positivereinforcementhorsetraining #horsesoftiktok #bronchorse #mountingblocktraining

My transition to doing way more R+ and “doing nothing” was for the welfare of my horse. I take a lot of pride in this because for a long time, I was doing way too much despite him telling me he wasn’t okay. Some more work with my fear reactive client. The notion that horses who are scared & “dangerous” need to be bucked out or forced to work through their escape behaviours in order to fix them is one that was created by people with a lack of understanding of behavioural science. It is dangerous and irresponsible to intentionally try to get an animal to engaged in unwanted behaviours that you’re looking to eradicate in order to fix them. Mistakes happen but deliberately putting an animal above threshold so that they appear dangerous is a sign of poor training. When sourcing people to train your animals, don’t be fooled by “exciting” and dramatic videos of explosive horses who they manage to “tame” afterwards. Such videos are indicators of the trainer relying on learned helplessness aka shutdown in order to get a gagged response from the horse. This essentially creates a ticking time bomb where the horse may or may not one day be sent enough above threshold that they react explosively because their fear has never actually been dealt with, the response has just been suppressed. Trailer loading is one of the most common behaviours that i see trained in a way thats unnecessarily dangerous and traumatic for the horse. Terrified horses are way more likely to hurt themselves in the trailer. A lot of trainers will train in high pressure ways that may get the horse into the trailer but long term the level of fear involved can be really dangerous. We all want to do best by our horses but it is so important to learn when we are doing something in an unnecessarily risky and traumatic way. No hate to the OP because this is so common. Please in 2024, lets embrace kinder and lower stress methods because they are better and safer for everyone. My horse used to load the exact same way and loading and unloading him back then was sooo dangerous #horsetraining #trailerloading #horsesoftiktok #positivereinforcementhorsetraining #horsetok #clickertraininghorses

I’ve found reverse round pen work to be so much more physically beneficial for horses than traditionally lunging AND they always like it better. Plus, it’s super fun! So, the physical benefits are great but it’s also fun for both horse and human 🥰 You can build one easily using traffic cones and traffic cone bars, available at any traffic / construction supply store (Uline etc) #horsesoftiktok #reverseroundpen #ottbmare #ottbsoftiktok #horsetok #positivereinforcementhorsetraining #positivereinforcement #rewardsbasedtraining #clickertraininghorses #horsetraining

Hiw often do you match steps? He immediately understood to visual cue and was able to sync with me despite my timing being RANDOM. This is a measure of partnership. This is a great exercise if your horse is distracted, frustrated or anxious. Observe their body language and movement carefully. Notice when he moves away i do not chase him, when he leans away a second time i give him MORE space, within 30secs he opts in without the use of force. That is the power of consent and choice. #horsegirl #equestrian #operantconditioning #positivereinforcementhorsetraining #ethicalhorsemanship #drafthorse #mustang

What am I doing here? 😅 This doesn’t look like much progress, right?! You won’t see me saddling & riding this girl in the first week and probably not even in the first month - no hate for trainers who do all that - but it’s just not how I train. Our goal in the first 30 days of her arrival is to get to know each other & build trust. She needs to settle and take in all the new things. I want her to learn that me being present is completly normal, it’s safe to be next to me, safe to approch me and eventually safe to be touched. Sure, I could just rope her and show her that touch won’t kill her, but I prefer to work at liberty. I’ve found that this builds an amazingly strong relationship with the horse. In the video you see her approaching and sniffing my foot for the first time. She has 2 hay nets hanging in different locations - away from me - there is hay in front of me, but it’s no different than the hay she can get in the nets. The bucket is empty. Yet, she chooses to get hay from right next to me. She walked back to the hay net a few times & then back to me again. She was checking out the situation & eventually was brave enough to sniff my foot. She licked and chewed and then went back to the hay net. This is huge progress in my book for day 2! (Note: I have studied horse behavior for many years & this is by far not my first Mustang. This is not a suggestion to put yourself in a situation that could be dangerous to you!) #devilsgardenmustang #mustangtraining #positivereinforcementhorsetraining

The way to the horse’s new paddock is quite a steep bank. But thankfully, George’s training, and past living environment, means it’s easy-peasy for him to walk up that bank😁🙌🏻 Also a great example that there’s many ways we can help our horses confidence, and build their skills to prepare them for certain challenges. And it doesn’t mean we have to push or force them into discomfort to do so🌟 #horse #horses #horsemanship #forcefree #forcefreetraining #forcefreehorsemanship #positivereinforcement #positivereinforcementhorsetraining #positivereinforcementtraining #horsemanship #training #skills #younghorse #percheron #draft

This one is for my disabled equestrians. Your body may not be as able as others, but you still CAN! Let your love of the horse fuel you when your body feels weak. Dont let your perceived limitations rob you of cherished experiences. Thank god i fell in love with that horse. Thank god i didnt listen to all the people who said i shouldnt buy him, that i was too sick and he was too much. Thank GOD i met Sully when we all needed him most. And thank GOD i didnt let my disabilities stop me. I hope the same for you🧡 #equestrian #horsegirl #horsetok #mustang #wildhorse #rezpony #positivereinforcementhorsetraining #operantconditioning #disabledequestrian #ethicalhorsemanship #drafthorse

Sometimes my hands and my brain are doing two different things. Today they were checking to see if my horse is still super patient with me, he was, and he got extra scritches and an apple slice. (Normally he self halters and lowers his head but all of his worst enemies (herd mates) were watching and you know, how DARE they🤣) #horsegirl #equestrian #operantconditioning #positivereinforcementhorsetraining #ethicalhorsemanship #dressage #mustang #drafthorse
