This is how animals see color. A group of scientists just created a new camera to help us see how animals see - and it’s so cool. Here's how it works and why it matters... You and I see color because of special cells in the back of our eyes called photoreceptors. But we can only see this tiny chunk of the electromagnetic spectrum that we call "visible light." Other animals have different photoreceptors, and can see more of it. We know that some birds and bees can see infrared light UV light - which means the sky looks very different to a bird! And sunscreen looks white to us because we see it reflect visible light, but it absorbs ultraviolet light, so it would look very different to a bee. Besides just being fascinating, this is one more way we can better understand the world. And it’s a reminder of how many ways there are to look at things :) If you like optimistic science and tech stories, follow for more! #hugeiftrue #sciencefacts #science #technology #animation #animals #askcleo #learnontiktok

How loud is a sonic boom from a supersonic plane? 20 years ago, when the famous Concorde stopped flying, the answer was close to a balloon popping right next to you or just above nearby thunder. In other words… LOUD. But now NASA is building a new, hopefully much quieter supersonic plane. That matters, because sonic booms were a big part of why supersonic planes were banned over many countries - and why you can’t fly supersonic today. If NASA succeeds, they could help bring back supersonic flight, and allow you and me to fly faster than sound. We got to go see NASA’s new plane, so if you’re curious, go watch our longer episode! This robot is a real-life Transformer. Right now, it's being controlled by a person INSIDE it… like in Avatar. And it can also transform from “robot mode” to “vehicle mode”... like Bumblebee. Or Optimus Prime. Or Megatron, take your pick. Buuuuuuut…. its top speed is only 6 mph. You might be wondering… why make this? Well, the company that makes these robots, Tsubame Industries, says their long-term goal is to build a version that’s helpful on the moon or in disaster zones. Right now though, it’s entertainment - proving yet again how excited we get about human-looking robots. If you are too, we made a whole longer episode about humanoid robots with Boston Dynamics. Japan just landed on the moon!!! But now, the spacecraft is upside down. Here's what's happening and why it matters. This is a huge deal, not only because it makes Japan the fifth nation to successfully soft-land a spacecraft on the moon, but also because they accomplished a very accurate landing, just 55 meters from target - which is WAY more precise than most spacecraft aim for. But not everything went as planned upon landing. But one of its main engines not lost thrust at the end and it tumbled, which means its solar panels are facing the wrong way and won’t be able to generate electricity. It could recharge as the sun moves, but for now, Japan has unlocking a new era of more targeted exploration on the moon and, hopefully, beyond! You can now make 3D models from just plain text. This tool allows you to type in anything you want - like "a purple sweater" - then, describe its appearance - like, “fuzzy” and “photorealistic” - then hit enter, wait several seconds, and VOILA! A 3D model. This is blowing my animation brain. We can make some cool stuff with this... This video is part of our show Huge If True. WTF is happening with UFOs? you’ve probably heard that 3 former military officials just testified to Congress that the US government has UFOs (now called UAPs - unidentified aerial phenomena). ever since I was a kid, I’ve hoped I’d be alive when we find aliens. so… is that happening? not so fast. #ufo #uap #stem #askcleo

can computers… smell? YES. and almost as well as humans can! a company spun out from Google Research used machine learning to train a computer on 5,000 molecules whose smell has been well-documented. it learned connections between molecular structure and odor, then created a map to show the connection between the two. here’s what happened when they put it to the test... if you want to support optimistic technology stories, follow for more :) #tech #science #stem #AI #learnontiktok #askcleo

What do I look like inside the Vision Pro? “Personas” are how you appear to other people when you’re inside the device. You make one by scanning your face with the device, and it creates a digital floating head that mimics your real face… People have been making some fun of these because they don’t look real by any means. But to be fair, both Apple and Meta’s avatars now are much better than few years ago. If any of these companies can make full body digital avatars that feel real, then this kind of tech is the most direct path to a totally sci-fi ability I never thought I’d see in real life: Being able to jump to another place instantly… or bring people to me… which is also called… digital teleportation. That’s the sci-fi future I want to see. We made a whole episode featuring and all about what this tech can do right now - and what it might be able to do in the future. You can watch it on our channel now, or just subscribe to see more optimistic tech stories from Huge If True. #science #animation #applevisionpro #visionpro #tech #stem #personas #scifi #sciencefiction #askcleo #learnontiktok

these mussels help filter microplastics out of the ocean… with their poop. microplastics are a big pollution problem in the ocean. they’re tiny particles of plastic that can clog the intestines of fish and hurt marine life. but these mussels have no problem eating and trapping them. so can we use that? yes, with some caveats… #science #ocean #climate #stem #askcleo
