POV: we're dancing at the party but I'm trying to explain why caffeine makes you feel awake... 🤨 Caffeine blocks the "sleepydust" receptor in your brain. ("sleepydust" is adenosine, a neurotransmitter). Usually, when adenosine activates its receptor, it makes you feel more sleepy. However, when caffeine is blocking that receptor, adenosine can't it to make you feel sleepy, even though the adenosine is still hanging around in your brain. Eventually, the caffeine unblocks from the receptor and all of that adenosine is able to come make you feel sleepy again. This was upwards of my 50th attempt at recording this (!) so the tragic ending is here to stay. If you're wondering how long caffeine stays in the body, its elimination half-life is about 5 hours, which means that after 5 hours your body has eliminated about 50% of the caffine. After another 5 hours, it would eliminate half of what remained (i.e., after a total of 10 hours, it's down to around 25%. #science #til #todayilearned #physiology #edutok #drnoc

POV: we're dancing and talking about vaping. Sponsored by Broome County Mental Health Department. Think vaping is just water vapor, nicotine, and some flavor? If only.. Vape fluids can be a mix of known and unknown... Although companies list their products' primary ingredients, they might not test for unexpected contaminants. In some cases, that can be concerning. From accidental benzene, a known carcinogen, to heavy metals like nickel or lead, the risks can be real. Those things are certainly not present in all vape fluid, but the concern is that it is not very clear which products have been rigorously tested for unwanted compounds, vs. which are extra risky. Overall, the health hazards of vaping are still being studied, and there are a lot of unknowns. #ad POV: humidity can 🤠 you? Sweating is a superpower? You probably know that your body sweats to cool off. You probably do NOT know that sweating is not as good at cooling you down when the air is very humid. This can turn into big trouble when high temperatures and high humidity are combined. "Lethal humidity" can occur around temperatures of 35c (95f) combined with humidity around 90%+. If you don't have access to another way to get cool, those conditions can lead to big health issues within ~6 hours. The kicker is that, as global temperatures rise, global humidity rises, too. (When bodies of water get warmer, more of that water tends to evaporate into the air, increasing the humidity) There are things that we can do to reduce the rate of climate change. We need to reduce our dependence/usage of burning fossil fuels, for example by reducing subsidies for fossil fuel-based industries and by incentivizing greener energies. Although personal choices contribute to the overall picture of climate change, we really need to change the decisions from the largest corporate entities. This can be done through regulatory action, but that will only happen once enough people are DEMANDING action from their elected representatives. Please help spread this information to other people. This is important for the eventual fate of our species. (And having the billionaires escape to another planet does not strike me as a very good solution.) [Note on hunting: There are some peoples today who are thought to still sometimes use "persistence hunting" to hunt prey, taking advantage of humans' ability to sweat and dissipate heat. Some of our ancestors may have occasionally used this method of hunting, along with other more common methods, including the use of tools. It is debated as common of a method of hunting it was for our ancestors, but it appears that it was used at least occasionally by various peoples through history] Embrace your sweatiness - it may be a lifesaver! #pushforpositivepower #science #healthy #medicine #climatechange #environment #environmentalism #lethalhumidity #todayilearned #til

POV: your red blood cells only live for a few months? Video sponsored by @GIANTmicrobes. Red blood cells have a relatively short lifespan of about three to four months. This is primarily due to the wear and tear they endure during their critical role in transporting oxygen throughout the body. As they continuously squeeze through tiny capillaries and narrow vessels, they can become damaged or lose their flexibility over time. Additionally, they are susceptible to oxidative stress (the opposite of "anti-oxidant" activity!). To maintain an efficient oxygen-carrying capacity, the body continually produces new red blood cells in the bone marrow, ensuring a constant supply of healthy and functional cells. The cute heart, blood cells and other organ plushies in this video were sent to me by GIANTmicrobes! They make for great gifts, and you should check them out!! #GIANTmicrobes #drnoc #todayiLearned #TIL #biology #health #heart #cardiology #blood #science #physiology #anatomy #hearthealth

(Video sponsored by @Mack Weldon) Why does armpit sweat stink, but arm sweat does not? There are two main types of sweat glands in your body: apocrine (stinky) and eccrine (not stinky). The difference is that apocrine sweat is rich in lipids and other nutrients, which is good food for some types of bacteria that turn it into stinky byproducts! So, the armpit sweat itself is actually not stinky, but it is after the bacteria have eaten it! This shirt is the 37.5 in blue yonder from Mack Weldon. It has a strip of material called 37.5 in the armpit, which helps keep the area cool and breathable... which reduces armpit sweat.. which means I am a bit less stinky than I would otherwise be! I wear this shirt pretty much all the time, and can easily recommend that you check it out. Use code DRNOC20 for 20% off orders of $100+! #science #todayilearned #TIL #drnoc #mackweldone #menstyle

🚨Where do our opinions come from? 🧐 In this series of studies, subjects were asked how they felt about generous and strict welfare programs. As expected, people who were more liberal tended to prefer the generous welfare support programs, and people who were more conservative tended to prefer the more strict programs. However, when the researchers told the participants fake political poll results, the subjects' opinions started to mirror the "positions" of their party. For example, if liberal participants were told that 95% of congressional liberals and only 10% of conservatives supported the strict welfare program, they rated it much more favorably. The scary part is that participants mostly denied having been influenced by knowing the stated "position" of their party. The data told a very different story! This means that this type of "in-group" thinking could easily be affecting you and me without us being fully consciously aware that it is going on. As always, the full research report contains much more nuance and interesting insights than I can include in a short video, and I encourage you to read it! It was called Party Over Policy: The Dominating Impact of Group Influence on Political Beliefs #psychology #science #todayilearned #edutok #til #longervideos

(Spoiler: science is always more complicated than it seems at face value!) It's not as simple as XX vs. XY. Biological seggs exists along a spectrum, not a simple binary. These are just two quick examples of differences of seggsual development that don't fit into the typical "male" or "female" buckets, but please note that this video barely scratches the surface of the nuance around this topic... and it does not even begin to address the diversity of gender identity and the ways that gender norms have shifted over the centuries. I am deeply disappointed that something so personal has become a "hot topic" of choice for some politicians. I would like to see the conversation shift from controversy to education while respecting the complexity of human biology and the personal journeys of individuals, instead of using them as political ammunition in a machiavellian game of societal polarization. #Science #Biology #todayiLearned #TIL #DSDs #Education #Diversity #STEM #edutok

😳What are forever chemicals? Why are they in some food packaging materials? “Forever chemicals” are also known as PFAS, which is a family of many different individual compounds that are mostly used to make products waterproof and greaseproof (useful qualities for food packaging materials!) For many decades, they were thought to be inert and to have no impact on health, but a growing body of epidemiological evidence had started to suggest that higher exposure to some types of PFAS over longer periods of time are associated with increased risk for a wide range of diseases. This is tricky, because among all of the different compounds that are considered PFAS, there are actually really big differences in their size, how long they stay in the body, and how they interact with body systems. This means that studying one particular PFAS compound doesn't necessarily translate to another PFAS compound. Still, on the whole, there is enough evidence suggesting that we should probably be consuming less of them, and so the FDA has now worked with food packaging material manufacturers to eliminate PFAS from food-contact materials. One thing that I want to make clear is that PFAS health risks are still being studied, but seem to be the result of higher exposures over longer periods of time. You shouldn’t really be too concerned with whether the place you got lunch from today has PFAS or not. That being said, at a population scale, the evidence is looking like taking PFAS out of food materials is a good idea for the long term. We all have a limited number of things that we can worry about, and there are other factors that will much more strongly influence your health that are worth spending more time worrying about than PFAS, like making sure to eat nutritious foods, trying to fit in some regular physical activity each day, and improving the quality and quantity of your sleep! #science #health #pfas #foreverchemicals #todayilearned #til #longervideos #drnoc what is pfas? Did you know that there was a link between alcohol and cancer? 🤔Recent surveys have shown that over half of American adults have no idea there is such a link.. but this is an important topic for health! The exact estimates for numbers of cigarettes per bottle of wine in terms of cancer risk are a rough estimate, but the important thing is to draw attention to the fact that there is clear evidence of an association between increased consumption of alcohol and increased risk for several types of cancers. This doesn’t mean that you can’t ever drink any alcohol; the dose matters, and drinking small amounts per week is different risk profile than heavy consumption. Thanks for watching!! ##todayiLearned##edutok##TIL##science##health
