Anyone else always dropping screws between the canvas & frame? 😩 🖼️ Here’s your ultimate guide to the hanging hardware u should use to ensure your artwork is ready to hang! The picture hanging section of the local hardware store often has a dizzying array of options so I wanted to simplify things! ☁️ LIGHT FRAMES or FLAT PANELS (under 25 lbs) Sawtooth hangers (aka. a small metal bracket with serrated edge) attached to the centre of the back of the art & hung on a small hanging nail in the wall. Some galleries don’t accept this hardware. 🤸‍♀️ LIGHT CANVASES or CRADLED PANELS (under 25 lbs) Eye Screws & picture wire. Choose the right size based on the weight of the painting. Put them 1/3 of the way down from the top on the inside of the cradle/frame. (They shouldn’t point outwards to wards the wall). U can stick rubber bumpers to the bottom two corners to protect the wall. Some galleries prefer you use D rings. 💪 MOST PAINTINGS (under 50 lbs) D rings with picture wire (or directly on nails) are the best for hanging most paintings they’re easily attached with screws. Get the appropriate size for your painting. You can also put a dust cover - a paper covering on the back of a painting. 🏋️‍♀️ EXTREMELY LARGE PAINTINGS (50-400 lbs) Keyhole hangers are great for hanging heavy art & are attached with wood screws. Hang directly on nails or screws that are preferably connected to a stud in the wall. Pre-drill the holes & tighten the screws with either a screwdriver, electric drill, or cordless screwdriver. 🤘 LARGE GALLERY PAINTINGS (50-400 lbs) French Cleat: a secure hanging system that consists of two interlocking pieces: one attached to the back of the canvas frame and the other mounted on the wall. Low-cost palette in caption! 👇🎨 One of biggest factors that puts people off oil paints is that they’re the most expensive type of paint. But why are they so expensive? In high-quality oils the ingredients are actually very simple - just pigment and oil. Because the pigment load is really high (as much as 75%) you essentially pay for the pigment. Artist quality paints are divided into series (usually 1-5) depending on the cost to get & process the unique pigment/s required to make that paint colour. Each pigment is ground & processed in different ways & has its own pigment to oil ratio, so there’s no one formula. To get it right there’s a long history of science and testing that newer paints like acrylic don’t have so there’s lots of evidence to show how they will last over a long time. In my next video I’ll talk about the ways to get high quality oils on a budget. But the good news is a little oil paint can go a long way & you can design your palette based on the pigments that cost less. TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE!! 🌙 #lincolnontario My brother convinced me to go to Niagara on the Lake to see the total solar eclipse today & I’m so glad he did!!! I’ve only seen a solar eclipse once before as a kid when I still lived in England, but it was cloudy. We were so sure it would be the same today but we monitored the weather radar & made a last minute change to a gorgeous beach in Lincoln Ontario & managed to catch the full eclipse standing on a beach between the river & Lake Ontario, with the Toronto, Mississauga, Etobicoke, & Scarborough skylines behind. It’s one of my faves as it offers a range of perspectives & answers very niche questions…If an artist has thought it it’s probably been discussed. Just remember it’s opinion from artists who range in experience/knowledge. ⭐️ Artists Network & EmptyEasel: both websites feature loads of articles & tutorials covering all mediums, techniques, & career advice for all levels. ⭐️ Art Business Info. for Artists: it’s like your artist friend made a detailed list of every aspect of their career from copyright, shipping artwork, avoiding scams & everything else. It even includes links to other resources though a few no longer work. I get the feeling it’s a little old as it doesn’t include a lot on sm, AI, etc. ⭐️ YouTube & Social Media: many artists (🙋‍♀️ like me @dorisroseart) give away tips & advice through their channels as it helps connect with collectors & share their process. Remember there are free ways to support the artist back by sharing, commenting & saving their posts! 💙 Share or tag your fave YouTube Channels or social media creators in the comments! ⭐️ Art Supply Store/Brand Websites: one of the first ways I dug into the science of oil paint was through the Winsor & Newton website. This is how I clean out my brush cleaning tank in which I use Gamsol to wash my oil paint brushes at the end of the day (before soap & water). A few times a year it needs a good clean out as sludge builds up below the coils. That sludge goes into a separate jar with which I make new paint. So technically I don’t waste any paint sludge or solvent from my jar. (Again see old videos for more!) 👍 I guess it’s copyright week as I’m still responding to questions from my previous video but so many artists aren’t taught the difference between copyright & ownership. In most countries Once you make an original work of art you own the copyright. So a collector can buy that work from you but they can’t start selling it on tshirts or using it on a website to promote their company and you are fully able to use the image to sell prints or license the image to a brand. Of course there are reasons you might not do this, and you can come to an agreement with the buyer.
