Low-cost palette in caption! ššØ One of biggest factors that puts people off oil paints is that theyāre the most expensive type of paint. But why are they so expensive? In high-quality oils the ingredients are actually very simple - just pigment and oil. Because the pigment load is really high (as much as 75%) you essentially pay for the pigment. Artist quality paints are divided into series (usually 1-5) depending on the cost to get & process the unique pigment/s required to make that paint colour. Each pigment is ground & processed in different ways & has its own pigment to oil ratio, so thereās no one formula. To get it right thereās a long history of science and testing that newer paints like acrylic donāt have so thereās lots of evidence to show how they will last over a long time. In my next video Iāll talk about the ways to get high quality oils on a budget. But the good news is a little oil paint can go a long way & you can design your palette based on the pigments that cost less. Earth colours are cheapest but below are some high-key colours that arenāt as pricy. āļø Hereās my low-cost < high-chroma palette (in the video): Cool yellow: Hansa yellow light (PY3) Warm yellow: Hansa yellow medium (PY 74) Warm red: Napthol scarlet (PR188) Cool red: Quinacradone Magenta (PR122) Warm blue: Ultramarine blue (PB 29) Cool blue: Phthalo blue (PB 15:2) Green: Phthalo emerald (PG 36) + White & Brown #oilpaintingtips #oilpaint #oilpainttutorial #oilpaintprice #buyingoilpaints #paintingonabudget #oilpainter
