Remember bold brushstrokes are beautiful, emotive, & intrinsic to oil painting, but it’s useful to know how to minimize them so that you can balance a sense of realism where marks are invisible with the characterful spontaneity of the brushwork to add to the personality of your work. Here’s how to prevent obvious brush strokes in your painting: THE RIGHT BRUSH: Use brushes with soft bristles eg. sable/badger/synthetic that lay down thin & even paint layers. They don’t catch the paint and leave ridges like course hog hair. HIGH QUALITY: Invest in good-quality brushes that hold their shape & distribute paint evenly. Low-quality brushes are scratchy/uneven so leave more marks (not to mention brush hair). A good way to test quality is push the brush into the palm of your hand, it should be snappy & bend in the middle. THIN PAINT: Mix your oil paint with an oil medium eg. linseed or Liquin creating a fluid consistency, helping it flow more smoothly, & allow you to work with less paint without it being too thick & difficult to work with. NO EXESS: Load your brush with as little paint possible for what you’re painting & add more in layers. DIRECTION: Pay attention to the direction of your brush strokes. Consistently going in one direction or in all directions can both create a more uniform appearance. BLENDING TECHNIQUES: Blend colours & edges by using techniques like scumbling, glazing, feathering or applying clean, soft brushes using a stippling technique to blur wet paint to smooth out marks & create gradual transitions.
