The mall, which some firefighters and police had instructed evacuees to go to in order to avoid falling debris and getting hit by jumpers, was actually easily accessible during the evacuation. Some of the evacuees had utilized the stairs covered by an overhang, now known as the Survivor stairs in the 9/11 museum, when they were leaving near 4 or 5 WTC. The mall was substantially destroyed after the south tower collapsed, but some portions of it were still intact.
