Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy & its symptoms are too important for parents/guardians and student athletes not to know about. It is not only affecting the NFL: Matthew Hamilton Brewer, 31, son of Beth & Jay Barrington & the late Timothy Brewer, died by suicide on February 19, 2021 Matt was a protective, humble & determined young man who was loved by all.. He was a United States Marine Corps Captain who became a dedicated firefighter for Kansas City. Matt began playing football when he was 8 and ended playing at The United States Naval Academy. He was a top ranked wrestler for Lafayette High School in Missouri during football’s off season. At the Naval Academy, Matt boxed and was the heavyweight champion in 2013. During his service in the military, he was exposed to weapons with the highest blasts, such as heavy artillery and tanks. Matt sometimes complained to his mom that he felt “woozy” after playing sports & was believed to have suffered at least 4 concussions. He battled with changes in personality, depression, paranoia, aggression, self doubt, confusion, & thoughts of suicide because of PTSD & CTE. Matt’s brother created a warrior workout named “The 38 Challenge” to memorialize and honor his hero. Their mission is to eliminate suicide through challenging the stigma associated with seeking help and showing vulnerability. His family brings awareness on YouTube’s “Family of fallen Marine Capt. Matt Brewer share struggles with PTSD, CTE symptoms”. NASCAR driver, Alex Bowman, of the Ally Financial sponsored No. 48 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE, drove a military themed painted race car in Matt’s honor at Charlotte Motor Speedway on May 30, 2021.
