NIGHT-TIME ROUTINE FOR A BAY ON DIALYSIS Join us on our nightly routine for Sully, our precious one year old in kidney failure. We set up dialysis, do a dressing change and hook up his overnight feed. This whole process takes anywhere from an hour and a half to two hours! At twenty weeks our son Sully was diagnosed with posterior Urethral valves— a blockage of his urinary tract. This blockage backed up into his ureters and kidneys causing stage 5 kidney failure. At 34 weeks, the decision was made for Sullivan to be born, because of minimal amniotic fluid (baby’s urine is a large part of their fluid, when it can’t get out babies have no fluid to breathe). After he was born, Sully had 10 catheters in his first ten days of life, and draining his kidneys continued to be a challenge. The decision was made to pursue surgery to bring his bladder and right ureter to the surface allowing his kidneys and urine to drain freely! Surgery worked and Sullivan still drains this way today! As weeks and months passed it became clear his kidneys were damaged too much to develope and keep up with him. The left kidney completely dissolved and is now considered a “remnant kidney” unable to be seen on ultrasounds. His right kidney is at around 10% function. At 9 months old Sullivan began peritoneal dialysis (“home” dialysis). We hook him up for 10 hours a night. We will continue this as we wait for him to be big enough for a kidney transplant—where he will receive an adult kidney. He has completed all evaluations for the transplant!
