Replying to @pepperlenox Finally got my money's worth outta that carpet so it was time to go. I did a happy dance when discovered that there was actual hardwood under the nasty carpet but that didn't last long because that was just 1 step , the rest were regular pine boards so painting the stairs was my only affordable option.
