Did you know former 𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐡 colonies are overwhelmingly more likely to have laws that criminalize homosexuality? Many African cultures did not see gender as a binary in the way European colonizers did, nor did they correlate anatomy to gender identity. In no African country prior to colonization do we see persecution of LGBTQIA+ people, nor any anti-LGBTQI+ laws. But now same sex relations, in its various forms, are punishable up to 10 years of imprisonment in 8 African countries, and punishable by death in 4 African countries. This is despite evidence that same sex marriage was adopted in 40 African countries prior to colonization and accepted.
