Remaking a bonsai trunk by grafting. The base of the trunk has potential but an old graft looks ugly. Im ‘thread grafting’ a new trunk leader. One day the existing trunk will be cut back to the new graft. First the wounds must heal and graft take successfully. A thread graft involved passing an existing branch - in this case attached to the same tree - through a hole drilled at the graft site. As the bramch grows it thickens and the tissue forms a new connection with the trunk. #bonsai

The best timing to repot your bonsai tree. If we do it too early, the tree spends longer in a state of reduce cold tolerance. Too late risks root growth being in full swing, we come and cut a bunch off, wasting the trees energy and compromising the trees ability to supply water to the young leaves. For most temperate species, the indicator is when the new buds are swelling and about to burst into leaf. That timing minimises the time the bonsai needs aftercare, maximises healing, with minimal loss of energy to the bonsai tree. #bonsai
