⚠️ This has to be the worst constipation advice EVER ⚠️ We need to talk about this. Why are “drink more water” and “eat more fibre” (or “take a fibre supplement, which is arguably worse advice) still the golden standards when it comes to seeking out help for constipation? PLEASE MAKE IT STOP 😣🫠😤 Here’s why this advice is a load of BS: 1. Stool hydration can only change when your transit time is in a good spot (ideally 12-24 hours), which means telling someone to drink more water is misleading. The longer stool sits in your colon, the more water is absorbed from it..until your transit time decreases. YES, hydration is important to KEEP your bowels moving, but it’s disheartening to hear this when increasing hydration won’t get your bowels moving (if your’e dealing with a lot of backed up stool) 2. Drastically increasing your fibre intake when you’re backed up is a recipe for disaster. Most fibre is fermented by your beneficial gut microbes, and don’t get me wrong, we love this process because it releases short chain fatty acids (more on this another day). However, when you’re backed up, the fermentation process will make you feel worse AND makes constipation worse because it’s adding gas into your colon. Anytime you add gas into a backed up, constipated colon, it will make constipation worse.
