Follow the ABC’s of safe sleep as closely as possible every night and for every nap: ✔️ALONE: baby sleeps in a seperate sleep space. It’s great to room-share, but never badshare. Their crib should be absolutely empty except for pacifiers — no stuffies, pillows, blankets, bumpers, positioners, etc. Ever. ✔️BACK: it’s ok if they roll on their own, but always place babies to sleep on their back initially. The “back to sleep campaign” of 1994 resulted in >50% drop in SIDS rates. ✔️CRIB: baby sleeps in a regulated crib, bassinet, or pack-n-play. Most cases of SIDS and SUIDS occur in an adult bed, a couch/sofa, or a device not meant for sleeping like a swing, infant lounger, or bouncer. Here is a full list of risk reduction strategies and protective factors (tummy time, pacifier, human milk, etc) from The Task Force on Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (2022): https://publications.aap.org/pediatrics/article/150/1/e2022057990/188304/Sleep-Related-Infant-Deaths-Updated-2022 Following safe sleep ABCs reduces risk by 95%: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3356149/ Lightning strike statistic rationale: ~3,400 babies die from SIDS/SUIDS each year in the United States (CDC). Only 5% of these occur without the presence of unsafe sleep factors — so about 170 babies who are sleeping safely die from SIDS/SUIDS each year (Trachtenberg et al, 2012). Meanwhile, about 270 people are struck by lightening in the United States each year. #pregnant #babiesoftiktok #safesleep #newborn #thirdtrimester #postpartum

Babies in active sleep may grunt, squirm, lift their legs, cry, or even open their eyes. Rushing to pick up a baby in active sleep will only interrupt their rest, and yours. Instead, wait a couple of minutes to see if they will settle on their own. When L was a newborn, I'd wake up to comfort him every time he was acting like this... which was about every hour. I thought he was uncomfortable or hungry and needed my help. Instead, I was unintentionally arousing him from his active sleep state and perpetuating my own exhaustion. When I learned of active sleep and stoped jumping out of bed for every grunt, grumble, and wiggle, we both started sleeping much better! #pregnant #thirdtrimester #breastfeeding #newborn #babiesoftiktok #babycare #babysleep

The AAP doesn’t update their safe sleep recommendations very often, so when they do, they mean business. Just because a product is manufactured and sold, doesn’t mean it’s safe for your baby. Use a regular swaddle / sleepsack and avoid “fad” baby sleep products that are supposed to make young babies sleep better/deeper/longer. Simple is usually best 🥰 #baby #newborn #pregnant #babycare #sleepsack #safesleep #safesleepawareness #newbornbaby #babysleep
