Out of the water after a frothy surf, and just in time for a sunset pasta dish courtesy of @patagoniaprovisions It’s pretty wild to think about the impacts us humans have had on this world in just a couple hundred years, and it really makes you reflect on every little thing you do, down to every little thing you eat. Modern agriculture does some pretty cussed up things to topsoil, especially with pesticide uses and annual harvests that tills and erodes the soils, and as an important store of carbon, its more important than ever to keep that intact. One of my favourite things about this pasta from Patagonia Provisions, is that it’s made from organic durum wheat flour and organic Kernza flour, which is a wheat-like perennial, meaning it lives for more than just one season like an annual, and as it grows over multiple years it forms really deep root systems that work to hold soils together to prevent erosion, while allowing for topsoil to build up and store more and more carbon. It’s also all grown regeneratively, which means that care is taken to preserve the nutrient load and topsoil health throughout the growing and harvesting of the grains which requires far less fertilizers and inputs while creating healthier lands for the future. With so much uncertainty in the world today, if there is one thing that we’ve become more and more certain of as time goes on and the data stacks up, it’s that we’re in the middle of a significant climatic shift that threatens the survival of life as we know it on this planet as a result of human activities, and that the sooner we take action, the better off we’ll be in the long run. Despite making up just 5% of Canada’s economy, the oil & gas sector is responsible for over 27% of our emissions, and it’s been rising steadily for nearly two decades now. In 2021, the Federal Government committed to cap oil & gas emissions to help meet internationally agreed upon targets, which were supposed to be implemented by the end of 2023…yet nothing has happened. The oil & gas industry in Canada is one of the most wealthy and powerful ones in the world, and it’s been using that wealth and power to slow, delay, lobby against, create loopholes, subsidies and change the wording of any proposed regulations to dumb them down and create inefficient policy that allows them to carry on as usual, to the detriment of all of us citizens, our communities, our families, our children, and the world we leave them. We need our government to step up and create the change they committed to for the betterment of our world by creating an emissions cap on fossil fuel pollution based on the best climate science available, that include all oil & gas operations, with strong rules and no loopholes that allows for our tax dollars to help them out, and hefty penalties for when they fail to meet targets. We’ve known about our role in Climate Change for decades, and this industry has been pushing back since day one, resulting in us being in a worse spot now than had we just taken action decades ago, and we don’t have any longer to wait. Spring is in the air, and that means that very soon, glyphosate will be too! 🤔 Also known as Roundup, glyphosate is an herbicide that has been linked to all sorts of health hazards for humans and wildlife, from things like microbiome disruption, nutrient deficiencies and inflammatory diseases, to cancer. In addition to widespread use in the agriculture industry, it has been used by the logging industry for decades as a means of suppressing deciduous trees in recent clear cuts that are seen as ‘competition’ to the more valuable replanted conifer trees. It acts as a defoliant, destroying young fragile leaves of deciduous plants and trees, though the waxy durable leaves of conifer trees are more resistant and relatively unaffected.  When forests are clear-cut logged, they’re often sprayed repeatedly with glyphosate, multiple times a year, to suppress and kill the deciduous trees they target until the replanted conifer trees are above a certain height and deemed ‘free to grow’. This is done without consent and sometimes without notice to the communities who live amongst these forests and rely on them for hunting, foraging or recreation on whats estimated to be thousands of hectares of forest annually in Canada alone, and millions of hectare across the whole of Turtle Island…but no one really knows how much is being sprayed, or how often, because no one has been keeping track - like, ever! Despite being banned in Europe and many countries around the world for its documented connection to these negative health impacts, it’s still widely used in the US and Canada.  With growing unequivocal evidence of its deadly impacts on wildlife, ecosystems, and human health, it’s time we ban it’s use altogether and keep it out of our waterways, our food, and ourselves to create healthier communities and ecosystems on the lands we all share for future generations. very year in early spring, thousands of tiny forage fish known as Herring migrate from way out in Pacific Ocean back to intertidal shallows along the coastline from Alaska down through California to spawn, where females lay up to 20,000 eggs on different substrates from seaweeds to kelp and eelgrass and even boughs of branches that hang in the water, and then the males come along and release tons of sperm into the water to fertilize them, turning the water a cool milky white turquoise blue…sooo the water color you see here is basically thousands of fish all blowing their load at the same time. …Kinda changes the vibe huh? But who are we to yuck their yum, good on ‘em for getting it on! Afterall, this event only happens once a year and can last as short as a few hours to a few weeks long, and is pivotal in maintaining populations of Pacific Herring, and that’s kind of a big deal because these fish are a common food source for a wide range of critters, tying terrestrial and marine ecosystems together. Unfortunately, these Herring populations are under threat from not only a lack of safe, sheltered habitat to spawn in, and boat or tanker traffic which disrupts their spawning, but largely due to commercial over-harvesting. Herring populations are a fraction of their historic numbers and on a steep projected decline as unsustainable fishing, outlining the importance of regulating the industry to protect these fish and incredible events like this for all who depend on them.
