The first 4 hours are down hill which means, on the way back, those 4 hours are uphill!

This may be the best hike in Europe😍👇🏼deets 📍Pico do Arieiro, Madeira Island Portugal 🇵🇹 Aka the stairway to heaven! This staircase is only 15 minutes into the first part of the hike! The Pico Arieiro to Pico Ruivo hike is best done one-way! You should start where the sunrise viewpoint (Pico Ariero) is and hike 5.5 miles to the top of the highest mountain on Madeira (Pico Ruivo) After you enjoy the views at Pico Ruivo, you only have to walk 1 hour to Achada do Teixeira. This is where you will get picked up and taken back to your car at Pico Arieiro. Make sure to set up a transfer/taxi the day before. We got picked up at 11:45am at the end and it was the perfect amount of time on this hike. If you don’t have a taxi set up, this 10 mile round trip hike may be the death of you as it is extremely challenging! We’re Ian & Ana an American travel couple who shipped our van to Europe!
