🚢 651 elephant tusks have been seized from a shipping container at the port of Maputo, Mozambique, enroute to Dubai. We applaud Mozambique’s Criminal Investigation Service together with the nation’s Tax Authority for their vigilance and use of X-ray to reveal the tusks hidden in the centre of the container, surrounded by bags of corn. 🐘 The geographic origin of the tusks is believed to extend beyond Mozambique and into Southern and East Africa. We echo the call of @ifawglobal and others for a comprehensive investigation utilising forensic science, and close cooperation between governments, to uncover their precise origin, providing insight into trafficking networks and trading routes. 🌎 This interception underscores the ongoing threat posed by ever-more-sophisticated criminal networks involved in the illegal wildlife trade globally and emphasises the need for continued efforts to safeguard the future of Africa's elephants.
