How I introduce dogs to the prong collar 1. Make sure that you’ve got the right size collar and it’s fitted correctly. 2. Start in a low distraction environment on a 6ft leash attached to the prong. 3. Make very light directional pressure on the prong, then mark with CHIRP and release the pressure the moment they give into it, and reward the dog with food. 4. Repeat. Once you’ve done this, the dog will understand how to turn off the pressure productively, and you’ll be able to use this tool in your training. REMEMBER: The prong collar will NOT teach your dog how to walk on a loose-leash, stop barking at dogs, and start listening to you. Once you’ve conditioned the collar, it simply means you can start using it in your training plan. ❌ Tools do NOT train the dog. TRAINING trains the dog. Do NOT use a prong collar if you do not have a training plan. It will do more harm than good.

When your dog doesn’t want to play with you, it can be discouraging. It’s easy to get frustrated when they choose engaging with the environment over engaging with you. This clip is from the second day with Arrow, and as you can see, he chooses the environment over playing with me. Notice what I do. I am not forcing him to play. I am not shoving the toy in his face. I am keeping the toy away from him. I’m tossing it, and chasing after it. I snatch it quickly off the ground. I’m playing by myself. I’m playing by myself, and I’m leaving the invite open. He’s welcome to join in at any time. For many dogs, you might have to do a lot of this in the beginning - so be prepared! If your goal is to develop the play, then this is all a part of the process. This is what real dog training looks like.

Training dogs like this can be challenging. Arrow is a genetically a reactive dog. This means he is hyper-aware of his environment, and his behavior can be easily influenced by things or changes in the environment. Arrow also has very thin thresholds for arousal, meaning he can get aroused or excited by things very easily. When you combine these two things together, reactivity + thin thresholds… and you also add in lack of training + history of reinforcement… you’re left with a dog who has learned a wide array of unproductive behaviors. In the training, we will have to REMOVE these unproductive behaviors (chasing squirrels, reacting at dogs, etc) and REPLACE them with productive behaviors (obedience, play, etc).
