I met the most adorable woman today. She was an older woman, her hair a golden grey, wrapped in clips with beautiful curls pouring down her face. Her name was Carrie (for short). We were both marveling at the crochet unicorn I held in my hands. She began to tell me about all the crocheted art she’s created over the years, and how her husband always supported her and her creative ideas. He was a motorcycle man, and she’d bring her knitting needles on their travels. She told me how much she misses him. She lost him to cancer years ago. His motorcycle still sits in the shed. She doesn’t have the heart to part with it, and on the days she misses him most, she goes into her shed and sits on the motorcycle - thinking of her sweet love. After us both wiping tears she said - I guess it’s the memories we are left with in the end. Memories, that’s a word I use all the time in my job - but her saying it made it more poignant. I told her all about what I do for a living, and how speaking with her made me realize that preserving memories within these vital objects makes my job much more important than I realized. She smiled at me and said “let’s both keep making and keeping our memories, ok?” I will Carrie. I will. ❤️🦄
