Protector alters are usually an EP, or an Emotional Part, of a DID system. Protectors are usually a defensive type that serve to defend the system or host. Host alters are usually an ANP, or an Apparently Normal Part, of a DID system. They function as the "face" of the system and typically try to blend in with society and go about normal everyday tasks.
