Replying to @Mae “student” has a consonant digraph blend (st) but no diphthongs, regardless of any dialect or accent that may impose a “yewe” sound on the long U. But words like crew (where you hear AND see “ew”) DO count as diphthongs because the w is necessary in creating the vowel sound “ew” even though w is modernly considered a vowel, which is cool & confusing! Replying to @Gregatron yes accents affect pronunciation of equally valid English words & I intentionally cited many examples of the “oo” long U that are not dipthong-reliant.
