Here’s another piece of DC history at the National Arboretum! These brick buildings have been here since 1904 when the Red Oak Spring Company was founded by Leopold Luchs. At the time, typhoid fever was an epidemic in Washington, DC and drinking bottled water was a popular precaution. Luchs capitalized on the disease by bottling the water from the stream that ran through his property. This is seriously SO COOL! At one point, this brick factory was one of the largest in the area. It changed hands many times but was commonly known as the United Brick Corporation. The mud used to make the bricks was gathered from the nearby Anacostia River. Bricks made here were used to construct several important buildings like the National Cathedral, the New Executive Office Building, and renovations made to the National Building Museum. The Pike Place Market has been in operation for almost 120 years! When it first started in 1907, there was no building or shelter at all, just a dozen or so farmers and their wagons. The structure we see today wasn’t built all at once, nor was it planned all at once. As the market became more and more popular over the years, more and more space was needed.
