The Lao PDR 🇱🇦 gained autonomy from France in 1949. However there are many notable influences left behind by the colonists. The town of Luang Prabang was given UNESCO world heritage status due its unique mix of Laotian and French architecture. In 1975 the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party came to power and has governed the country as a one party socialist state. I certainly don’t want to romanticise either colonialism or radical politics, but I am fascinated by the interesting history of this nation. It cost me $41USD for the visa to visit so now I’m making the most of it!
