On Thursday, Venice became the first city in the world to charge day-trippers a tourist fee. Under the pilot program, tourists who are not staying overnight will be charged roughly $5.37 in order to enter the historic city. Other individuals, like workers, individuals born in Venice or people visiting relatives who live in Venice, are exempt from the fee. The goal is to mitigate large tourist crowds that pack the historic city during the peak season. Any day-trippers enter Venice from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. local time between April 25 will need to pay the fee. Those who do not register and show a QR code or ticket could be fined between $53 and $322 dollars in fines. Many local residents are protesting the program. #venice #veniceitaly #daytripper #daytripperfee #venicefee #venezia #venecia #italy #venicetouristfee #tourist #touristfee #deemazein #pbsnews #newshour #pbsnewshour #news #italynews
