Hygral fatigue weakens the hair’s structure, leading to damage, breakage, and loss of elasticity, regardless of how easily your hair absorbs moisture. Low porosity hair has tightly packed cuticles, which makes it difficult for moisture to penetrate. When low porosity hair is repeatedly exposed to water or overly moisturized, the cuticles are forced open, causing stress on the hair shaft and can lead to cuticle damage. Once the cuticles become compromised, moisture retention becomes even harder. Medium porosity hair typically has a good balance in moisture absorption and retention, but it’s still vulnerable to hygral fatigue if exposed to too much water or over-moisturization. The constant expansion and contraction of the hair fibers can lead to reduced elasticity, making the hair more brittle over time. High porosity hair has cuticles that are raised or damaged, which allows moisture to enter easily, but also makes it prone to losing moisture quickly. Because of this, high porosity hair is especially susceptible to hygral fatigue. Since water easily enters high porosity hair, the hair swells too much during wetting, putting stress on the already weakened cuticles. The cuticles, which are already compromised, can become even more damaged, leading to breakage and an inability to retain moisture effectively. So, why does it matter? Hygral fatigue weakens our hair’s structure and reduces elasticity, making it more prone to breakage and frizz— which I’m sure we all can agree that we want to avoid these issues. Limit over-wetting, use protein and moisture treatments wisely, and blow dry or diffuse (or use a hooded dryer) your hair on medium or low setting to prevent hygral fatigue.
