Let's take a look at the latest failed health company startup that promised A.I. assisted medical diagnostics to thousands of patients, and has now abruptly closed its doors. Forward Health raised 100 million dollars to build care pods. Literally primary care in a box. A year later, Forward is now dead, leaving thousands of patients in the lurch. Founded in 2015 by ex-Googler Adrian Aoun, their thesis was to modernize primary care with a tech-enabled, subscription-based model that would directly charge patients $150 a month for supposedly unlimited primary care. Forward's focus was not digital health. It was actually heavily brick and mortar with large, expensive marquee offices in 19 locations in major U.S. cities like New York, LA, and Chicago. They wanted to expand their footprint throughout the U.S. But with the arrival of Covid, they decided to bet on something different. A self-serve primary care pod. Forward's pitch was that the human was actually unnecessary. That A.I. and self-administered diagnostics would be enough. They set up only 5 functioning care pods before their recent closure.
